Split Rings and their uses...

Perhaps I'm missing the forest from the trees, but for applications such as coltsnipers/mega baits, aside from the ability to quickly swap out hooks to the lure if it becomes damaged, is there really a need to use split rings if one can just have them welded? Why aren't hooks just welded on a ring to the jig from the factory like all surface iron and yo-yo iron jigs? Why are these types of lures different from the factory?

Additionally, what other use cases are there for needing split rings? Flat falls? Similar here, that the community feels that a welded ring would be better/best. Not sure it makes sense to invest in rings and another tool just for split rings, if one was willing to invest in a brazing tool, which could be used for all these use cases. Of course it's impractical to take a welding tool on a boat to make repairs/swaps, but I like most people usually take many "backups" of all different types of jigs in various sizes, so .... I feel like I'm missing something very obvious? Please educate.

Can swap out jigs easily for different colors, weight, style, etc. No need to have a million assist hooks. Have a millions jig instead and just swap em out with the same assist hook.

Only reason for split rings is to change whatever you have on the ring.

Might as well weld your key ring.

... it's almost certain someone will think they bought a defective surface iron and end up complaining about it. Makes it hard for the mfg to keep up a high star rating on Y3lp reviews.

Typically colt sniper/megabait type jigs have thinner, weaker treble hooks that will bend on big fish. You have an option to swap them out if youre after bigger fish. The heavier hooks affect the swimming action too... Split rings are way faster if that happens.

    Agree 100%
When we were hooking the 40-80# bft on snipers last year; we grabbed our trusty Pitbull Tackle split ring pliers and bought 6 packs of 3X Owners and changed out everyone's hooks on the boat. Several dead bft... lol

Faster, easier, lands big fish just fine if you buy the appropriate quality split rings for what you're going after. Worried about knots on the split ring sliding and getting nipped off? Tie to a swivel and add a split ring on it or a split ring on every lure.

What size were the snipers and what size split rings did you replace them with? Was it with the regular Pitbulls or the HDs?

Re rig with ST-66 Owner Stinger treble in 2/0 or 3/0. If they made them bigger than 3/0, I'd use them. Those Mustad Kaiju hooks come in really large sizes... choke those BFT on them! Of course, they come with big prices too!

My application for split ring(s). I can swap out the jig in 60 seconds to put on a different color/weight jig while keeping the same hooks. The split ring only carries the weight of the jig, not the fish in this application. This is a "figure 8" ring, rated at 250#'s that connect the hooks, then a split ring to connect the to the iron (speed jig).

    JM Figure 8 Solid Ring

A 8 figured solid ring will prevent the jig from swinging to leader and cutting the leader ehile the fish is on.
Using 8 figured solid ring can simply reducing te possibility of leader being cutted by split ring when big fish is hooked.

Nice set up Mike. I use figure 8 but attach the assist hook to the figure 8 to keep my jigs hookless in storage with minimal tangles. Leaders are kept separate or made as needed.

Might as well use a swivel and prevent line twist rather then figure eight.
All of my flatfall is on a Quick Rig Pro Grade ball bearing swivel. I prefer it over the figure eight. The action is a bit better on it when using heavy leader.

I was told to put away my 300# leaders and stick with 200# primarily. Said 300# interferes with lure "action"
I have a habbit of overkill on line etc...especially fishing at night
