the very first day i ever set foot on the spirit of adventure was august 31st, 1997. i remember because that was the day that princess diana died. since then i've been on the boat every year except for two. 21 trips over 23 years. it's not the biggest boat, but i think it's one of the best. starting 5 years ago, i've been running a charter myself through this website. this last trip was number six!

october 14th, 2019 - is starts out the usual way. driving from the san francisco bay area to san diego takes 7 hours.

traffic was nowhere near as bad as we had expected.

1_05_11_19_9_54_22_300701051.jpeg

we pulled into the vagabond near the landing.

1_05_11_19_9_54_22_300701653.jpeg

we met for dinner at miguel's cochina, then off to club marina for more drinks and a game or two of pool!

october 15th, 2019

breakfast at denny's is always how we start the trip.

1_05_11_19_9_54_45_30076396.jpeg

the SOA came back with quite a few wahoo from the previous trip.

1_05_11_19_9_54_45_300761262.jpeg

already in line!

1_05_11_19_9_54_54_30078736.jpeg

annemarie keating handles all the paperwork and all of the money. no trip to guadalupe this year, so no $250 surcharge.

1_05_11_19_9_54_52_300782499.jpeg

the rod racks fill up fast!

the first stop always the bait receiver. this year the sardines will be miserably small. most were not much bigger than jumbo anchovies. it will make fishing difficult.

1_05_11_19_9_55_16_300852292.jpeg

our chef, david, put together a sandwich bar for lunch.

1_05_11_19_9_55_18_300861709.jpeg

i got my personal gear set up first. the lighter stuff was penn torques and custom phenix black diamond hybrids. the heavier gear is penn international visx's and custom united composites.

fish count wise, it was slow, but this is not the hardest fishing group. weather was great, the guys were great, and the crew was great. looking forward to next year!

and the best quote of the trip is from my brother, ed! "gentlemen, put your hands together for fifi!!!!"

Thanks for putting up an actual fishing report vs questions about what braid shears to buy. Lol
Looks like you guys had a good time and as long as the group was happy with the trip, awesome.
Did look like a tougher trip fishing wise.
I’m a fiercely loyal charter head myself and appreciate what you do to make these trips a success. It’s work, but when you get a group together year after year it’s so great.
As far as the food, I choose the menu with our chef on my trip. The boat is very good to me. looks like SOA does you well Too.

Unless you ride the Spirit it is hard to describe the experience. Once you ride the Spirit you then understand why they are typically filled each trip with repeat anglers and never post or advertise.

It is not the fanciest of boats, it is not the largest, they do not serve gourmet cuisine and they do not have internet.

It is all about the relationship between the crew and passengers, the comradery between the passengers, and the attitude of making sure everyone participates and has a great experience.

I am on it for a 4 and a 8 day in 2020 and cannot wait. I am also booked for a 6 day on a boat that has all the attributes that the Spirit does not have - and I do not have the same excitement for the trip.

That's why small charter groups are the best.
I love no internet. Guys need to unplug. Knowing everyone's name! That's obviously a solid program as guys keep coming back.
I know Dave S can cook, he was on the Supreme for several Seasons and he was able to meet Tommy's very high standards. He can be a very good chef.

Thanks for the detailed report Alan. You know it's a good operation when slower fishing is just part of the overall picture. Food, friends, good weather!

Appears the food was more Cafeteria Style & Make your own meal/s than the Usual Quality dining associated with the upper tier long range vessels...

Especially that photo of the spaghetti with the salad on the same plate & the Processed cheese on top of the refried beans!.....

Seems like Lots of Chicken!.....Were you served ANY Prime Rib?....Steaks?....Pork Chops?...Any home made soups or fresh baked bread?....Quegueg
I was thinking the same thing!

Sorry about last post, just saying i love this boat and the food doesn't have to be a 5 star rating for me. But i do gain a few pounds every trip. And you cant beat the all around prices for the boat.
