I have gone on one overnight trip out of Cisco's in Oxnard on the Pacific Islander and enjoyed myself. good fishing and good crew. Problem is I live in San Diego so the drive to and from Oxnard, especially later in the evening on the way home is just long enough and I"m just tired enough to make it a tad unappealing.

none of the overnights locally target rockfish as they're all hunting Yellowtail. Personally, I enjoy catching rockfish and would rather spend the day catching multiple fish that I like eating rather than hoping to catch one YT. not that the YT aren't good to eat or anything but I enjoy catching the bottom dwellers just as much and they're a bit more of a guaranteed catch.

at any rate, I'm looking for recommendations for closer boats from personal experiences other members have had.

I see that Newport landing and Davey's locker each run overnight boats (I can't tell but they seem to cross promote one another so maybe they're both related business-wise?) Dana sportfishing also seems to run some as well.

part of my problem is that the websites for Newport, Davey's locker and Dana Wharf kinda suck. they aren't too clear on what dates trips are even available, what the costs, are, and whether a trip is sold out or not. But, I'm willing to try based on other user experiences.

So, any recommendations? any other landings that I missed that are worth trying?

thanks

Michael

Toronado out of pierpoint landing is a great overnight boat. check out the counts. Also if you mention 976-tuna you get on for only $100!

Check out 976-tuna for cheap trips and pics and stuff. i usually find really good deals and also live audio updates.

Good luck on whatever trip you pick and post up pics when you get back!!

Your best bet would be either Long Beach Sport fishing, 22nd St Landing, or Pier Point Landing. All have good overnight boats that will target Sea Bass and Rockfish this time of the year.

why not jump on a day an a half trip put of the san diego landings that go down to colonet
they dont focus too much on yt fishing, maybe an hour or two in the morning then you have the rest of the day to hit up the rock fish
just an option

I have never fished out of NP or Davey's, but I have fished both the Clemente and Fury out of Dana. Enjoyed both Capts and crews and caught fish. I would hop overnight trips with them no problem. I do have to agree that Dana Wharf's website is not on par with the the San Diego operations. Good luck and post pics!

the biggest thing up this way most boat,s don,t have fish hold,s to keep your fish fresh, they sit on deck all day, make sure the boat you pick, has a fish hold, make,s a big difference my 2 cent,s

primarily cost. the overnight and longer trips out of San Diego seem to run a bit higher. tacking on the Mexican license and Visa starts to add up. but it is something to consider.

I never book trips through Dana Points website. Zerve charges a 'convenience charge' like TM so I just call to make a reservation. If they have to many reservations when I call I just pass.

Daveys Locker and Newport Landing are owned by the same person. There overnight usually try a little bit for wsb and yt at the islands and then finish the day with rockfishing if nothing is caught in the morning. Just call the landings and ask when they are running the overnights. Usually if one landing is not running one, the other landing will be. The thunderbird out of Davey's does not have a fish hold but they do have some ice chests when the put the fish in

Depending on where you live in Sd , going to Newport for a overnighter seems like a lot of work! Getting back and driving 60+ miles home. It's worth spending the extra out of h and m landing/ sea forth. Follow their fish counts. The San Diego seems like the best boat to me. When the yellowtails dissapear they focus more on rock numbers.

I don't fish party boats much! I prefer private boats 19to 25'. (3 or 4 people. Never more than $300 total/$75, 100 each for gas bait burritos and beer.) You work together to make a fishing plan that works for all. Boat owners always need extra people and if you can be a good deckhand and put blood on the deck, clean their boat throughout the day and at the end, always kick down a little more $, you'll get repeat invites.

My 2 cents!

If you want to save some cash and not have to drive far, why don't you just go fish the new seaforth and full up on rockfish. The bites been really good and the price is about 40 bucks, and it's close here in SD. Just another option.

like pch says, the half day out of seaforth is a good option as well
its 45 bucks for the morning trip and if you want to reride for the pm trip its half off, so 70 bucks total for a day of fishing, hard to beat that
i know i do it all the time

i go out on the local 1/2 days fairly often. I jump around on the different boats though i do have a couple of favorites. personally, the quality of the fish caught on the half days locally versus the quality of the fish I caught on the overnight trip can't compare. the size of the fish are (were) much larger with more sheephead and ling cod being caught on the overnights (verified through fish count history too). I personally feel that the local kelp beds are way overfished or the charters just can't get on top of the prime spots holding a lot of bigger fish but most of the fish I ever catch locally are smaller.

if you limit in the morning then you either don't go back out in the afternoon (you have to disembark to purchase your afternoon ticket) or you keep fishing anyway and give anything over your limit away. I've done both scenarios in the past.

I used to fish Davies Locker a bunch on the 1/2 and 3/4 days until the started doing the Groupon promotion and started over loading the boats. The captains and crews were always GREAT! I have never been on the Thunderbird but it looks like a nice boat, and they have been going out to San Clemente Island and putting up some really good counts the last week. That boat never gets over crowded either because the don't run the Groupon special for it. Best thing to do to get info at Davies is call them. In my opinion the boats out of Davies Locker are a little nicer then Newport Landing, I have also heard that they have better electronics too, so they are better at finding the fish. Good luck with your decision and have fun!

Lol @ the Groupon deal. Almost bought a couple of 3/4 day tickets.... good thing I checked beforehand.... They always have a ridiculously full load.
