Randy (RAR) and I took my sled out to chase the elusive bluefin, and for the second time they remained, well, elusive.

We ran to the east end of Cat and dropped the MadMacs in around Avalon bank. From there, we trolled around the island to the Farnsworth area, where fish were caught yesterday. Temps were going up while signs of life were going down. We saw one fish on the meter who proceeded to short bite us just shy of Farnsworth. At least we got to hear the clicker on my 30 wide. Signs of life were getting worse, so we bagged the idea of circling the backside and decided to box the bank and out further.

Nothing.

A couple people called out numbers 12 miles towards Clemente near the mackerel bank. Going there would have us back at the ramp very low on fuel—and out of fuel if the awesome sea state changed for the worse. I’m taking an extra 10 gallons next time—so we can chase radio fish 😎

Temps were around 70 on the front side and up to 75.5 on the backside. Weather was Chamber of Commerce. The only non-dolphin foamer we saw were footballs. WTH? We drug a MadMac thru them and tossed jigs at them for nothing. Big bones?

Back at the ramp, everyone I talked to had blanked too.

Fucking bluefin!

Randy is great company and is welcome on the Trailer Trash any time.

Steve and I are going again Friday. Mexico is looking better and better.

The only fish we saw all day had a fear of commitment and short bit us.

Heard fish were caught mid channel, so we trolled most of the way home.

Hunting tuna is hard to give up, but keeping some lighter sticks on hand if you come across some other pelagics helps keep the morale up

I was chilling near Descanso Beach Club yesterday. Saw what appeared to be several foamers about 1 to 1.5 miles outside of Avalon Bay. This was about 3:30PM to 3:45PM.

We had jig sticks. We stopped on a few paddies for nothing. On the way in, we stopped on a couple bass spots, but the wind was ripping by then.

Bluefin fishing is a go big or go home, usually go home most of the times. The water temperature around Catalina is too warm for bluefin. Thank you for the report.
My son abs buds caught this 100lb fish yesterday , 8/9. Basically just off the shelf off the Vs on the backside of Cat. Trolling west along the ridge.
The channel to the Mackarel bank are jugged. Big school of YFT out there as well.
After this mini wind event moves out, Saturday-Wednesday look epic.
Edit: yes- it’s still and always bluefin tuna fishing :)

I feel your pain, but keep hope alive! You will get them.

I have a Robalo Cayman and when chasing BFT I also get fuel anxiety, especially when trolling MadMacs at 15kts. I usually bring 2 or 3 x 5 gallon fuel jugs just in case when heading offshore. Also keep in mind the extra weight that will be onboard after you score. 2 weeks ago, we had 320# of BFT on the deck and that also lowered our MPG getting home. Even with 10 extra gallons on that trip, the fuel gauge was blinking when we got back to Huntington. Definitely bring extra fuel next time because fuel anxiety sucks!

MPG goes down due a deck full of fish... nice problem to have!

Do you have gyros? I honestly don't know how anyone can miss the bluefin with the amount of fish out there. Sometimes it takes a little looking around but usually not much.

Hey Kman. I went out to the west end and past about 7 miles looking for the bluefin on Wednesday. I was in my 18' Gregor tin boat. Spotted several giant patties along the way and back. All were empty or fish not interested in my Tady. One smaller patty held 2 Dorado that chased my lure but bailed quickly. No strikes on the Yo-zuri bonito. Never saw any foamers the whole day. Beautiful day with a few jumping dolphin to keep me entertained. Can't wait til these patty fish start biting.
