Had a Phenix black diamond 909xhj and found I could only really launch heavy jigs.

I have a Phenix abyss 809 20-50 that I use with a tranx300 to launch 40-80gram coltanipers. But would like more backbone. And also a nine foot rod possibly.
Looking to get a 400 size tranx and pair it with another rod that will launch small irons not a broomstick not a Phenix abyss.
What do you use for small irons?

was told seeker black steel rods are glass on top and composite on the bottom? couldn’t find an answer online

Since you are already fishing the phenix line, try the axis series in the 90H. I really like that one for smaller jigs like a tady a1 and the 100 colt sniper isn’t a problem either. This is becoming my go to rod for light small iron locally. I have it paired with a tranx 400hg.
I have landed yellow to 30 pounds on it, so it’s got some pulling power.

Mine is a custom wrap and I put a reel seat on mine. Blasphemy, I know.... I just wanted the reel seat for smaller reels without purchasing a clamp, and I have used my trini 14 on this rod as well, and that feels nice too. But I know that tiburon makes a clamp for the 400.

Recently went on a jigs only trip with some friends. I used a CE wahoo 1000 and CE 900 Del Mar all day. Got 6 yellows from 20 to ~30lbs. Fathom 25N buttoned down all the way with 40 XXX. Worked really well. I don’t think there are perfect surface iron rods for every situation, but I like these CE rods a lot for bigger fish. All fish for me that day was on a JRI 3 and 7.

I had an F100 that really fished lighter jigs well, but had an unfortunate incident with that rod before this trip...

Not enough info here...
are you a new skool shotgun/graphite kinda guy or
are you a old skool pendulum/glass kinda guy?

how small is small?
are we talking Tady AA Lites
or are we talking Tady C's? or Salas 2x200?

IMHO:
smaller tady AA size and there abouts = any 270-8 glass rods (a few brands made this model), or even a 196-8H.

on the heavier end for maybe a Tady 4/0 lite, any 530 Glass style.

Also: graphite rods; a faster/lighter spooled reel will work better. EG: Newell, Daiwa SL, etc. glass rods are more forgiving.

but that's just me...

So I picked up an axis 900h with a reel seat, guy at the shop said it was too much rod for a 400 tranx but imma do it anyways. Going to get a 401 low gear and add a power handle to it

I don’t think it’s too much rod for that reel. I put a tranx 500 on it, and that felt ok, it was a little on the large side, but it will work too. I personally like the 400 on that rod. It feels like a nice pairing to me. Do what feels right to you. If it doesn’t feel good, you can sell either pipe s and move on and try to find a better match.

With a 400 and that rod your spool's going to be pretty small at the end of your cast, if you're set on that go with the HG.
