i believe i have the exact same question, but not sure of the terminology and i haven't been able to find a short definitive answer

RE: the normal clicking zzzzzzz sound when turning the handle (not the strike warning clicker)

QUESTION: what parts cause this zzzzzzz noise and is it possible to eliminate it - it's very annoying

Turn the radio louder!

The size of game the EX series are intended to catch call for bigger heavy duty double dogs. Because of the size they need to be to the only logical place was to put them in the left sideplate. Can't use or scale up in size the same silent design as the HX series and smaller because it wouldn't be strong enough. Also Avet's silent dog design need the main gear/shaft to work with it's components. So let the dogs bark, just them letting you know they're still working.

Silent Abu-Garcia style dogs tend to be backups for an ARB and not the primary anti-reverse. The clicking is the spring loaded dog moving against a ratchet. My Toriums have the clicking dogs from the Trini DC. The click is the sound of confidence!

Just take the dogs out...
Sounds like that would significantly change a function of the reel

I just want to silence the zzzzz while turning the handle

At this point I don’t even know what the dogs are or how the reel generates the zzzzz

I would first like to know if that’s possible then a clue how to do it

The dogs are spring loaded so the sound is caused by the dogs moving over a ratchet. As the spool moves in reverse the dogs catch against the teeth of the ratchet. The click? Think baseball cards against spokes on a bike. It’s easy to see how they work on a star drag reel where the dogs and ratchet are under the gears. No dogs = no anti-reverse = knuckle buster!

The VISX has a pair of "Ambassadeur"-type dogs. Time will tell how reliable they are. Interestingly, the Avet 30 has dogs very similar to older Penn Internationals. I hate the sound too, but they are bullet proof.

Turned the handle on a 5500C. Quiet, but there is a very soft click sound, if you really listen closely. Or it might be wishful thinking.
Hey, if you want quiet, buy a Valiant!

How does the Makaira and VISX overcome this?
AKSalmon got it right. Double dogs with friction ears on a ratchet gear located behind the drag plates. Back ups to ARB I believe.

Maks adapted Avet's silent design from the HX and down. Double dogs with each with an arm connected to a friction ring behind the main gear.

Avet EX adapts older Penn International's design. Noisy but bulletproof. But so far so good for the Maks and VISX as we've seen many cows come over the rail without a hitch. But as said earlier time will tell...

Thanks! I don’t think I’ve seen or heard a report about issues with the Maks and havnt had any with mine. Seems like a proven design at this point. My 12vsx are pretty damn loud, really tough to wind a jig with it, but for anything else the noise doesn’t bother me.

I will never understand why the sound of dogs bothers some people. If nothing else, they prove the reel is working. Now people winding with the clicker on is another story.

One correction: The VISX dogs are not back ups to ARB; there is no ARB in these reels.

It's not a jig reel
