Summer is in full swing, for Surf Fishermen and beach goers in Southern California that means one thing - STING RAYS. Nothing sucks more than getting tagged by a sting ray on a sunny afternoon. They ruin your day, possibly your whole week.

Shuffle your feet and keep an eye on where you plan to step! Want to learn more about Surf Fishing Safety?

Take it from me, the sting ray barb in my foot pictured below turned into a 4-hour hot water soak.

My good friend has been the lifeguard at dog beach for 26 years..
My dog and I go hang out with him and fish there all year long..
As soon as the water warms and the bait pushes up on the beach they show up in force..
Because it's in the harbor only a few people go in the water and it don't take long for the parade of people to limp up to us giving a clue as to how many rays are in the surf here..
They are easy to see swimming in the channels close to shore..
Hot water is the only treatment they use and it immediately stops the pain..
They have had as many as 80 victims in one day between veterans pier and Alamitos ...
And by the way shuffling your feet lowers your odds but definitely isn't any guarantee..

As a long time surfer and surf fisherman I have always used the “stingray shuffle”, crazy how close they get to the shore. I often poke them with my surf rod.

The worst sting I had scene, guy walking out with his board, gets hit.. ouch! Turns around to walk back in and zap!! Stung again on the other foot! I heard meat tenderizer works well.

Meat tenderizer is used to ease the pain of jellyfish stings, not stingrays. Vinegar is even better for jellyfish, btw.

Getting meat tenderizer into a puncture wound or bloody laceration would not be easy. However, if you are successful, you'll discover that salt is the primary ingredient in most all meat tenderizers. Rubbing salt into a wound is said to make a difficult situation even worse.

Immersion of the injured part in hot water, as hot as you can stand without burning yourself, is the accepted treatment for stingray venom injuries. Once the pain gets better you can stop the hot water. If the puncture or laceration is deep or extensive, you might need antibiotics and wound repair. If you get medical attention they will also want to update your tetanus vax status. And while you are there, they will try to give you another Covid shot because we all need more of those.;)

When I got stung, it was between the Pinky and ring finger. Just below the knuckle.
That thing oozed shit for 2 months.
Don't be drunk fishing on MB jetty in the middle of the night, alone. At least have a drinking companion.
