Just a quick report from this limited load (21) trip. Great group of guys with slow pick full moon fishing. Approximately 40 bluefin total from 40 lbs to 255 lbs. Sinker rigs and jigs during the day and assorted heavy jigs at night. We did not fish night 3 for a medical emergency and thankfully that angler is OK. I got my sportboat personal best 255 lbs winding in a knife jig from 350 feet. Crew and food were top notch as usual !

Congratulations, how long did the fight with the 255lb take? What rod/reel/line did you use?
It was under 10 minutes from bite to 3 gaffs ! It's my typical night fight the last few years and bad on the deckhands shoulders :)

Talica 25, Calstar 780xh and 130 seaguar threadlock to 25 ft 150 lb mono wind on to 200 lb seaguar bite leader

some luck mixed with some decent technique I assume....when bit I go past strike to get good hook set and that maybe stuns the beast (just my theory), then back off drag to strike or just below as he takes his initial run...I stay super tight and switch to low(talica 25 has a high low gear which I like for these type of fights as able to get line faster if he swims at me without switching back to high)....within a few minutes it's boatside as it ran from stern to bow instead of out or down. Luckily as well, only bite for the boat for that night so I had 3 crew ready. It came totally out of the water prior to gaff and back up, not laid out flat

Curious what you set strike at with 130, and what drag you finish the fish with?

When you hook into a big fish slowly push up the drag. I use Mak's 20-30 and 50's. The reason for this is I see guys pulling hooks at the start of a big run. I go about half way then more as the fight goes on. On 130 I set my drag about 30-32... and I can hammer to full when the fish is on the death circle.

Surprised you're not pulling hooks. What # do you have at strike?
