I am thinking of pairing Shimano Terez Tzcr-74h-sr with a penn fathom 40nld2.

I have had this rod for a while but haven't really caught anything worth mentioning. My question is, is that a good pair for a 80 to 100lb tuna? I know I can trust the 40nld2 but the rod, hmmmm. Thanks

I'm not familiar with that model. Several of the Shimano rods I have tugged on were extremely over-rated compared to my comparable UC rods; like the 80# rated Shimano Teramar my friend was fishing with had less lift and recoil than my UC Tilefish Jr that I use for 30#.

Best way to know is to mount your reel on it, and try lifting 25# off the ground. If it does this effortlessly, with some left before it shuts down and goes all parabolic on you, then it is good to go. If it is a steady bend from the reel seat to the weight and you have trouble getting 25# off the floor then I would look for a different stick.
