I have three of the old ones. I always wondered why they discontinued them.

    I want one....

    $250 at TackleDirect

The old used ones with the fightin’ star still sell for $100. Still popular in the UK where they add magnetic cast control.

Wish we had more details bout construction bearings and materials used. Probably a cast aluminum body 3 or 4 bearings plastic bushings single dog. J&H calls it a bottom fishing light troll reel. Free spool/bail is probably slow maybe heavy spool, greased bearings, no sleeve? Shimano is smart just like their hg toriums will never come close to a trinidad A series so their top of the line talicas will be similarly product protected... Unless we mod them.

    I fondled one today:

    1) I forgot where but it was published that is has 4 bearings compared to the 6 found in the Tac 12/16. Reels shipped without schematics so I couldn't tell you which specific bearings were removed.
    2) Handle has a little more resistance, but was still smooth.
    3) The left sideplate is plastic.
    4) The preset knob is non-racheting.
    5) There is a strike catch button (prevents the lever from being pushed past strike until depressed).
    6) Freespool felt similar to Talica, didn't have line on it to gauge drag output smoothness, but given that Shimano reduces manufacturing costs by maximizing parts commonality, I'd guess everything maintained in the spool assembly is essentially the same.

Overall it's a pretty awesome reel, especially for the price. I own nothing but Talicas (as far as lever drags go) and I'll probably get one as a heavy jig/popper reel.
