Hey BDers, been out of the sport for a couple of years and just getting back into it. Ive been a shimano guy from the begining starting with Calcuttas.

Recently ive been looking into Avets (SX's and MXL's) was wondering what you guys think about it, and whether i should switch over and test out Avets.

    How about the torium 14&16?

    Any input is good input!

    Thanks guys!

Toriums would be more of a comparison for Avets. Both are good reels and will hold up especially if cared for

getting back into it you need two rigs. 20-25# rig and 30-40# rig for killing some albacore and small tunas, yellows, dodos.

    Id go with a

Torium 14 and Torium 20 for these two rigs OR
Trinidad 14 and Trinidad 20 OR

if you want to try Avet go with the two speeds for better resale and you will like having the two speed, yes even fishing 25# line when you hook a 40# fish.

    MXL6/4 and JX6/3

cant go wrong either way. Good luck.

Calcuttas don't compare to any of the avets IMO. Im starting to love trinidads though, they are awesome reels, but I cant dump 400 bucks into one reel like that. I probably will soon though. You can't go wrong with avet though, American made workhorses.

If your money is long go with the trini's short money stick with the torium's the 16 and 20 are great reels all around and you can not beat the support from shimano.personaly I prefer the star drag over the lever that the avets use, the avets are sweet little reels but if you need to loosen the drag in a hurry its a problem, just my two cents...

Great replies guys! I have a Shimano Calcutta 700 (not the new te's) never spooled it, was thinking about getting rid of it for an avet, think i should just hold on to the 700 and use that?

I currently have two Calcutta 400s and love them. my 700 im yet to use...

Stay with Shimano you'll be dissappointed w/ Avets. Star drags perform better for our local fishing applications.

    Go with Trinidads over Calcuttas.

Sounds like im sticking to Shimano's.

Since i cant really fork out for a trinidad, will a Torium 16 be an upgrade from my Calcutta 400?

The Torium 16 is 4x the size of a calcutta 400 so yeah, it's an upgrade if you're looking to fish 25-30# line. If fishing 15-20# stick with the Calcutta or go with a Torium 14.
