Shark Attack at San Miguel island: 2/26/22

Coast Guard airlifted a shark attack victim from a boat at San Miguel island on Saturday at noon. The victim was transported to a Santa Barbara hospital. CG did not release any details of the attack...

Back when problem seals were shot and white sharks caught, human interaction with both was pretty rare.

White sharks were caught and killed for food internationally until recently and seals protected since the early 1970's.

Now both species are protected, their numbers way up and increasingly; we're on the menu

Not my intention to imply any right or wrong just stating the way things used to be. I've been diving SoCal since 1977 so I've noticed a trend or two.

If my recall is correct, there was a fatal great white attack on a surface swimming sea urchin diver at San Miguel back in about 1994. It is a feeding station for transiting sharks going both north and south, as well as west toward Hawaii..

What possible reason is there to kill a white shark?

Food. Same as a Thresher, Mako, a 30 year old massive WSB, or a mythical BFT weighing 350 pounds.

What possible reason is there to kill a white shark?

Well lets see , It can sure feed your ego and make you feel like a tough guy , you get some cool teeth to make a necklace out of , and you have enough shark steaks for you and your buddys to last a few years or until they get freezer burnt ! Sounds like a good enough reason for me ! .... lol
