Good morning all,

Fred Hall on Wednesday was a blast. Running into old and new friends surrounded by fishing stuff and information is just tough to beat. At some point in most all the conversations the discussion would turn to the application of high end Spinners and Long range fishing.

I was actually shocked at how many folks were considering giving Spinners a try. Without giving out names a whole bunch of well known and not so well known long rangers are considering and will be trying them out for Cow fishing.

Many folks will ask why would anyone even consider it and the following is the reasons many of us have and were discussed at the show. Take it for what it is worth as it is not a post for argument merely a clarification of what is being done and perhaps why.

Prior to the 2005 cow season, which changed big fish long ranging forever, there was a certain amount of respect which was given to anglers who had caught even one cow. Not only respect from others but a culmination of a fishing goal set by the individual angler and the self satisfaction which comes with achieving ones goals.

The amount of days on the water and rail, the preparation for assuring your gear was up to the task as well as getting your body in shape for fishing the giants was just a must as it was mandatory given the tough battles and the lower quality of tools back in the day. Guys would go years and even decades without actually landing a cow. Reels used were as big as the guys fishing them and getting spooled or just getting worked by the fish was just part of the game.

With the advent of Hollow spectra, or solid, amazing rods, and more powerful two speed reels combined with rail rodding, we have changed the dynamic of the type of individual who can catch a cow. In other words almost any body type, in shape or out of shape, old or young, experienced or inexperienced can now catch a cow or three. In my opinion this is great though I am sure this feeling may not be pervasive amongst the old time long rangers. I believe this has been a fantastic boon for our long range industry by just allowing more folks to experience the joys of cow fishing. In today's world we all look forward to instant gratification unlike the old day's were we really expected to work for it. Today, even if you do not land a cow almost every extra long range trip provides most every angler with a bunch of very large tuna.

What I really starting hearing at the show is now those of us who have been there and done that for many years and decades can now get back to Mono y Mono with cow fishing using Spinners once again creating a group of a few fishermen who were willing to try something different, have to work like a son of a gun, be in good or great fishing shape, make sure all gear and connections are perfect, spend years to actually succeed, yet accomplish something few have done. Can the same be done with a single speed conventional and no Spectra using only a harness or just a belt... Of course and it would take you back to the Mono y Mono days of yesterday but it has been done albeit by few of the present day fishermen but it has been and was done for decades. In short, many of us want to get back to the challenges presented in decades past.

So now comes an entirely new method for folks from the West Coast Long range scene, Thanks to companies like Accurate and Shimano to go head to head with giant fish taking away many of the tools we are using today which give huge advantages to the fisherman and taking the edge away from the fish. Even with my rail rod device or a harness the use of Spinners really pits man against beast. At some point or in most points in the fight you are pulling, using proper technique, for all you are worth testing your stamina as well as the quality of your gear and connections. However unlike the Arena in Rome we hope when the beast wins the man is not destroyed or eaten. Instead we just go try it again by putting another bait or jig in the water.

I suppose we will wait and see how many folks actually try this but it sounds like many are gearing up to do so. This is clearly not a question about which type of reel is more efficient in landing giant tuna from a long range boat as without a doubt a properly rail rodded or harnessed big game setup with Spectra and powerful two speed conventional reels without question are in a different league. No, this is about satisfying the desires of a few or perhaps many who wish to Pit themselves against these magnificent creatures we call cows once again giving the edge back to the fish. Beating the odds, for some of us, has its own rewards.

For this angler I cannot wait to see more folks trying the technique and hopefully succeeding creating their own sense of self satisfying, goal achieving, success done for no other reason than to see if the individual has got what it takes to land a cow on a Spinner.

Heck, Perhaps when enough folks succeed at this we wil next try cow fishing using the Ronco Pocket Fisherman or maybe the New and improved Zebco. Okay, I won't be one of those guys........ Well maybe.

Fishing is about challenge. If it was about meat and pure efficiency we would go to the market and get for $10 a pound something we prefer to catch ourselves (and pay $100 or more a pound for if you consider the cost of gear and boats etc).

Guys targeting large tuna with spinners are gonna get worked doing battle with a beast in the pit, no doubt.

But as above, when you start feeling bored at the rail soaking baits once again, when you get another even 250' class or so fish on and you know its really very straight forward to deck him...so you hand him off to somebody's kid...you start looking for other challenges.

Hmmm, how can I reach those fish boiling way out there? Or man, I wanna catch a Cow on an artificial where, instead of having a deckie pin a horse on for me and then soaking it, I supply the action to the lure. I figure out what's working...I figure out what kind of presentation will get bit and fool those older and larger fish. Anyone that fishes artificials will enjoy the challenge.

I think peeps will be amazed at how productive stick baits are when the LR boat has brought the school to the boat with same sized chum. And what a relief to avoid the cluster at the bait tank etc etc.

Good times to be had. Go for it while you still can boys. We'll be in our rocking chairs all too soon!

I watched a guy catch a cow on a Spinner on the Intrepid in January, I beleive it was an Acurrate. They got the fish in the boat but the reel was done when it was over.

Perhaps this is in order here, just fun, we'll see:

There once was a man with a very big spinner,
    His ambition and aim:
    to land a big winner!

Now his ‘older’ boat pards were hoping the same,
but alas, they’re all ’Yankee equipped’,
with naught, but conventional type frame.

Bye and bye, “All baits into the water!”
Big Spinner lobs away as our boyo’s all holler,
“Not Fair” “ ‘Tis Foul” as it carries much farther!

Oh yeah, it’s ordained, and despite our brief fun,
    our spinner man hollers out:
    ……..“I Got A Fresh One”!

How impressively spinner man yanks the rod up & down,
much faster, I venture, than a monkey
    ……as spanked right at dawn!

Over & under, down the rail does he go,
    some sawing, hi-sticking,
….just a few rods knocked to & to fro.

We old farts in mass put down our meat sticks,
maybe we’ll learn a new thing,
    (or call it a trick)!

No matter the game plan, no matter the others,
if a big spinner is made, this, BY GAWD,
    is Big Spinners druthers.

Some hours later, Big Spinner is finished, all vanquished…..ALL DONE,
    'tis a 300 plus pounder,
    and a very nice plum!

Boat company asunder, our man spouts with glee,
    “Look here my lads,
look what I and my big grinder have wrought from the sea!”

But big bellies, and jaws were all in a droop,
    as us ancients looked on,
not a grin in the group.

Deny how we might, it’s all sadly true,
but please Lord not now, please,
at least, not ‘til I’m through.

So hear ye well, DON’T DARE GET IN THE WAY,
    a new breed is aboard,
…….tis’, well, a doctor you say????

Shoot, now I can't decide whether to get a second stella spinning setup or a castable conventional setup (like an avet hx raptor). I wish shimano made a slighter bigger spool though. Would save me from spending another $300 on superthin line. That accurate 50sr looks like it weighs a ton, but it certainly would hold enough line.

I am going to have a rod specially built for the occasion, and get myself a Twin Spin. And then I'm going to catch a cow on a spinner.

I guess I am going to have to put a few in the boat with a spinner. Wait I better see how much they are, I may not be able to afford one! I am still sort of amazed how much help "most" anglers I have seen need in landing these large fish. I think some guys need to go to the gym and learn how to get them in the boat on conventional tackle with out handing it off to the crew for a break before considering doing it with a spinner. Now I watched Jaime fight his fish all the way to the boat, that was cool ( especially for an old guy)LOL, just kidding. I watched David Tang get beat up on one of his cows, I think he was using his 12 with a weenie rod. Stick to your 30 LOL, I hope you tipped the crew good they did a lot of reeling on that fish. If you need help next time ask me I like reeling em in, LOL. Just razzing you guys. Maybe when I am 60 I will need a harness and help reeling too! Naw, if I can't get em in I will cut them loose!

    Jack,

Please don't let the truth be known (help from the crew - special thunder braces, etc.) you are blowing our game plan! The tackle industry needs guys to re-tool on expensive new toys that are inferior by design so they can sell another one that it is even more expensive next year. In addition we want the young, under challenged, and the restless to work themselves into exhaustion so there is more free space on the rail for the "old school" guys using the gear that consistantly produces.

Ya Marcus you are 100% right, my responses are really kinda silly anyway cause in reality the spin doctors don't stand a chance at converting even 5% of the LR fisherman who are seriously targeting cows. I promise not to say another word on the subject just for you (who ever you are - not sure?).

    tight lines!
