Wow! What a great day of "catching" with Cap'n Juan. There are a good number of awesome captains here in San Quintin but if you have a chance book a day with him and you can thank me after :) He Never disappoints!
On the boat by 6:15am and headed out into the bay to make bait. After loading up with awesome hearty bait from 4" to 12" it was a rough ass, victory at sea ride out. I mean rough! 4 to 6' swells at 8 seconds or sooner interval.
We get out to the grounds with the rest of the panga fleet looking for Yellows and there were only a couple good size ones brought in I think on Jaimie's boat, a Gal and her daughter actually brought them both in!! Met them at the fish cleaning, Great folks. Anyway, and all we could manage with slow trolling and drifting are 10 or so good sized Bonita's. They are fun to catch but we don't like to eat them so..... Juan decided to go try for soon reds and lings around the 240 spot. That was a great call as we all hooked up and landed lots of quality size fish. Drifted and reset in 275' to over 300' multiple times, each drift resulted in at least one good size Reds and Lings of mixed size. Got my personal best Ling and Red's!! The big Lings and Reds came on a shelf that would drop another 50' or so. Trick was to keep on the bottom without snagging up so you knew when to let out more line for the shelf and then BOOM!!

No pic of the ling but we do have it on video. ill upload that one later but it was a monster! Called it a day around 2pm and headed in with some tired ass arms. Epic trip again for some quality meals!!

I think I saw your ling at the cleaning table. That was a great sized ling cod! Captain Jaime's son, Pelon (Eduardo), had the crew who landed the big yellowtails. What a windy, wonderful day that was! Thanks for sharing your report. I've never fished with Captain Juan Cook, but have seen him on and off the water several times and he has always been friendly, knowledgeable and a class act .
