With the forecast calling for some cooler temps, wind, and big swells later this week I wanted to jump on the San Diego full day once more in case the tuna split further south. I’ve done this trip once every other week since August and the local tuna fishing has been off the hook. Today was no exception.

We ventured southwest into Mexican waters and started seeing signs of life about 20 miles from MB. Put in the trollers and immediately got hit and stopped the boat. Only a few fish were landed on this stop, a skippy and a yft. Continued trekking SW looking for a better school that wanted to cooperate.

After a bit of searching we finally get on a decent school, throw a couple dippers and fish are boiling around the boat. These were mostly 20-35lb bluefin, mixed with similar sized yft, beautiful grade yft today.

We would plunk away at this school for the entire day. Not necessarily wide open, but had fish hanging pretty much the entire time, with some exciting flurries. They were boiling on our chum the entire day, often times going full airborne out of the water. A lot of the bft were caught on sinker rig. The yft bit flyline and colt snipers. Same story as it’s been, 20-25lb fluoro and size 2 or 4 hook. Bait selection, presentation, and being able to cast away from the boat was absolutely critical.

The boat ended with 123 yft, 18 bft, and some skippies. I landed 6 yft and lost another 3 or 4 due to tangles and pulled hooks. One fish gave me the business peeling 100 yards of line before being chewed off. A couple of the yft I landed were 30lb models, with the rest 20-25lbs, lots of fun on light line.

Booger and the crew were awesome as usual. Shout out to Booger for staying out late, he gifted us a nice sun downer and we didn’t get back to the docks until after 8. Still catching tuna, and quality grade at that, within full day range deep into November is just silly.
