By closed the person probably meant temporarily while the Navy does live fire exercises... Check out http://www.scisland.org/ for closures.
I was out there on 8/30 and had the navy kicked every one out. We were 3 miles off the east end of the island with the hole fleet. To bad the tuna fishing was good slow pick on 25 to 100 pound Bluefin. The skipper said that the closure was not posted on the web site. If your planning on going maybe you should call and talk to a live person. I don't know the phone number.
Checkout the website for the definition of the closure zones. I was out there when they closed the Pyramid Cove area and out 20 nm due west for live fire exercises. They provided coordinates for the closed area via vhf. I do not think the closure went near the 43, but you should check or call to be sure. Rumor has it that all areas will be open for the holiday weekend....
As far as posted closures by the navy for the SCI marine test range. No posted closures!!! But never a given. Things change!! It's the military. Us catching fish is of no concern to national security
Been there many times many years, and occasionally the Navy suddenly decides to run everyone off for live fire exercises. The inflatables come out towing the targets and tell boats to hit the road...even though not posted on their site. Tbird, others got kicked out about 2pm the other day I read. It happens. Hell I'd worry more about 200+ boats at China Point/Pyramid Cove this Labor Day Weekend than the Navy....
