Offshore San Carlos Report

Went down to San Carlos for a couple days of fishing. First afternoon we got there we ran out for a couple hours and caught one dorado. Second day the wind and waves were up but we did manage to catch a nice sailfish. Third day conditions were perfect and we caught several skipjack and landed 3 dorado and lost a big one right close to the boat. First time catching fish on my boat which is a 1997 18’ Parker. Still have a lot to learn but having fun!

No problems at all. Just make sure you get a TIP (Temporary Import Permit)for your boat. I filed for mine through Baja Travel Club and it took almost two months to get it. I would suggest you just get it at the border. I hope to get back down there in October as well.

It looks like we will be down there on the 15 of oct for a week or two depending on the fishing. My boat looks a lot like you accept mine is a Mckee Craft. Maybe we can team up. I have applied for my TIPs Thank you. My brother has a lot of experience fishing that area. this will only be my second time, first time with my own boat.

October is usually a transition month when most of the warm water fish have moved south and the yellowtail and bait are just starting to arrive late in the month. Usually lots of bonito though.

Lately, the climate has been wierd as I saw a marlin on a cold Xmas day while limiting out on Yellowtail.

I asked around and this is whats going on.

Tournament this weekend in San Carlos so you can google that to find out what the boats are after and bringing in.

Water is only 86, not 90+ yet like on most seasons and the tiny bonita are now everywhere, making it hard to get lures down to the bigger prey.

Big yellowtail jigging at 400' deep and the grouper jigging is currently around 800' if you want results, so these are light line set ups with 400 gram long jigs to avoid a huge bow in your line.

Sails, dorado and Marlin are around and your will probably see a tuna or two from the boats that are willing to burn a lot of fuel.

Shallower Yt may be a possibility in mid October but August is the hottest month and jigging that deep is for studs, It was 100F with about 85% humidity yesterday, even though its been raining and felt like the hottest day of 2022 to me. Good fisherman are getting 2 yt, 2 grouper, and a few snappers in a morning, so us old farts are letting the young bulls run while we take siestas between meals and drinks.
