On our way out to the Prairie this weekend we stumbled upon this cool looking Saildrone. We motored close enough to get some cool pictures, was pretty cool to watch it adjust its hard wing to calculate its course based on wind and current, it was doing close to 5kts.

We did a little research and found out more about the technology and what they are used for. check out this link to learn more:

The one in particular we saw has a pretty cool mission, straight from their website:

"The goal of the mission was to augment ship-based fish stock assessments and answer questions about whether autonomous data collection can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of fisheries management on the West Coast. Using echo sounder sensors, the USVs collected a data set on the fish stock of hake, sardine, and anchovy populations"

Here's a link to the data set for the west coast survey, pretty cool that it monitors Chlorophyll concentration and Sea surface temperatures. Curious if this will be useful for tuna fishing?

Anyway thought this was cool enough to share, the salmon fishing wasn't what I had hoped for this weekend. Hoping things pick up soon, as the usual onshore and offshore spots didn't seem to produce like they normally do.

We saw several out of NB at this time last year. Took us awhile to reconcile what we were really looking at.
