I recently had to take a cut off grinder to some seized up bolts on top of my boat. What I didnt realize is all the sparks that went flying everywhere ended up turning into rust spots everywhere. They look to be stained pretty deeply into gel coat.

Before I go buying gel coat rubbing compound,I assume this is what I need,I want some input from someone who may have had to deal with this issue and how it was resolved.Thanks.

Hull Cleaner (Starbrite or Attwood) at Wally's. Easier on your gelcoat.
Don't leave any of them on too long and keep them off your galvanized trailer.

I learned that lesson a while back using steel wool on a boat. I used starbrite hull cleaner, but CLR works also. Don't be surprised if the spots come back a time or two.

Diluted muriatic or phosphoric acid.Spray it with a squirt bottle and have the garden hose ready,as soon as the rust disappears hose it off.

FSR is what you want. Westmarine or Marine Exchange. It's in a gel form and works great on anything.

Yup, the only thing that worked for me, and I tried everything. Just brush it on and let it sit for 10 minutes, then spray off, keep doing it until all the spots are all gone.

Some products work good, some work ok with a bunch of elbow grease, most are just ok.

This stuff is amazing. I buy it by the gallon and keep a spray bottle on the skiff and one in the 5th wheel trailer.

Spray a little on those rust spots, 5 minutes later hose off. No stain re-appearance, no scrubbing, no nada.

Spray it on an oxidized hull, walk away for an hour andf come back to a near new shine on your gel coat.....really.

I've tried EVERYTHING else over the last 30 years of boat ownership and this stuff is the bomb.

I am skeptical of cleaners with "bio" in their name, but you did a great job of selling it ;)

I had the wife order some from amazon

CLR - Calcium, Lime, and Rust.
    FSR - Fiberglass Stain Remover.

FSR - Just as cheap and works on lots of things on a boat.

WINK.....K-Mart has it and it comes in a brown squirt bottle like chocolate syrup. Works like magic, don't even have to scrub most spots. Turned a lot of people on to it and they love it......WINK!

CLR worked.put in spray bottle sprayed on and let it sit for almost an hour till rust just disapperaed,no scrubbing or buffing.
After the rust spots were gone I could still feel the metal specks stuck to the gel coat.I figured the rust would come back if I didnt get those out so i took some 3M scrub pads, the blue non scratch not the green and rubbed surface till smoooth.

    Thanks for input guys.

Barkeeps friend work great. It is a natural product. containing oxalic acid from rhubarb. Oxalic acid is ingredient used in many rust cleaning agents. Be careful using wink. It contains fluoric acid. can cause blindness in the eyes
    and tissue/bone damage.

Those metal flakes were hot and are actually inbeded inside your gel coat now. You are going to have to remove them or it will happen again.
