Almost nine weeks since being diagnosed with a heart problem and told to limit all physical activity, including any kind of fishing, I got back in the saddle and fished on the new improved Rubber Ducky, with Captain Lal, Wed. 06-26-19.

After open heart surgery on 05-20-19, replacing my Aortic Valve and repairing my Mitral Valve, I have spent nearly six weeks recovering, enduring lots of discomfort, lack of sleep, fatigue and so looking forward to continuing my life, pursuing one of my greatest passions, fishing!

My many thanks to a wonderful wife, Sheryl of almost 50 years, son and daughter Troy and JoDel, my entire family, Brothers and sisters, incredible friends like Lal and all the Bloody Decker’s on this board that have stepped up and shown unreal support for my healing. Thank you all so much!

My surgery Doctor released me from purgatory last week, allowing me to drive and after begging him to allow me to go fishing, for light fish, like Bass, was granted the privilege a week later. Lal was more than willing to accommodate me, knowing we would have to tread lightly. The new improved Ducky rides very nice and I any pounding was not a problem.

So we went fishing Wednesday 06-26-19. We launched out of Davies in Long Beach at 6:15 am. As we exited the breezy harbor, the seas were a bit lumpy, the forecast called for 5-7 knots of winds all day, yeah right? Weathermen enjoy a charmed life, never having to experience their own faults on the open ocean!

Lal made a beeline towards the Shoe, where the mixed Bass fishing has been just short of spectacular lately. We arrived to clear blue water, with water temps at 63.5 degrees rising later to 64. Today’s low tide was at 10:50 am, and a sensational rise to 5 feet at 5pm. Little did we expect to remain fishing that long.

On our first drift the meter looked good, but the bite was a slow pick. We both caught a couple of Calico Bass under two pounds. I got hammered on a later drop, using a four inch Clear Red flake plastic, with a 1 oz. lead head, catching a very nice Red:

We worked the area until 8:30 am, catching a dozen mixed Calico and Sand Bass. A very slow pick, myself with a nice Calico Bass:

Lal elected to move us up to PV, where he had not fished for a month. We fished various structure spots and caught 40+ mixed Bass to 3 pounds.

Lal with a nice Calico Bass:

At 11am Lal moved us back to the shoe, hoping to find some willing biters. We could not complain about the current, as there was plenty all day, causing some serious scope out.

The meter was lit up and we expected some great Bass fishing, yet it was only scratch fishing, these Bass just didn’t want to go get with it. Still we moved through the numerous spots in the area and managed to add another 20 mixed Bass to our count.

As per usual approaching the afternoon, the wind was up a little. We called it a day at high noon, and while arriving to the dock, the wind was easily at 20 knots. We ended the day with a little over 70 fish, not wide open, but darn good fishing!
