I have read Tim's reports in the past and have found his writing style to be both eloquent and vibrant...almost like he is a closet Zane Grey. He certainly has a way with words...but what was THIS all about in the report of June 3?
While I can guarantee that the results of your fishing voyage with an experienced Captain will not be the result of pure luck, I can not say the same of the results of a trip with an inexperienced Captain. Yes, sometimes luck is better than experience. We have all had our rear ends handed to us by a new comer. But, who would you rather stake the success of your voyage on? Someone who has never fished a day in these waters, or someone who has fished down here for many years?

Economy appears to even affect the LR boats. Also remember that pie is getting cut into a few more pieces. A guy has to throw out a statement that he believeswill cast a good light on his operation whenever possible. I believe as they say "it's business".

Everyone has a shitty day, and obviously Tim is addressing something that was said to him on. Bottom line is that the internet takes away a lot of advantages that the guys who have fished out of San Diego for years might have in terms of where the fish are at any given time. Lots of skippers take chances and they are hit or miss.

Tim's a good guy and while my opinion of riding with him on the Star may not reflect guys that ride that boat regularly, I still respect the hell out of his fishing ability and his knowledge.

Uh....Just Tim ranting... I'm sure he doesn't hold that to be true in all areas... like fish processing for example...how much does experience matter, or can any new guy do it, and still get a good result on occasion?

    i wouldn't call it a rant.
i would think he is dumbfounded.
it's a fair statement to ponder.
think about any trade where one has paid one's dues on top of a fair amount of talent.
especially in this game, luck happens.
kinda like the guy pursuing a cow/supercow all his life and some raw rookie beginner comes aboard and bags one.
the worst part is when they start talkin shhhht and acting like they are all that.
    if you catch my drift.
    tough pill to swallow sometimes.

IMO the best way to gain a business advantage is to offer a superior product which creates satisfied customers who make referrals.

Running down the competition, either directly or indirectly, makes you look more like a politician than a good businessman.

    Cheers

    That part really stings John!

OK, now I've gone to the RS website and read the WHOLE report. It reads somewhat differently than a small excerpt. Don't read too much into this.

    WX-

Dude- are you bored out there in Phoenix? I know Tim personally and he's one of the most stand up captains out there.

You must have spent way.... too much time looking for this, your small snippit of a quote, which is way out of context.

Not out of context and in no way was this meant to be a slam against Tim. It was a sidetrack part of an "on the water report" of fishing conditions that I read just like everyone else on here looking for info. I wasn't knocking him at all as I have TONS of respect for Tim, Randy and their crew. The guys are among the best at what they do and they run a top notch operation. In fact I would not hesitate to hop on a trip with them. I just thought it was odd that he chose to include this in his report...that's all.

Probably not a good idea to vent by typing and posting, somtimes you just need to let it go and come back strong tomorrow.

I will say this as I dont talk to the long range fleet because they will not talk to me as I have tried many times to communicate with several vessels and they just ignore me because I am just a short range zone 1 boat and dont rate with them I guess.I have been in the fleet for over 20 plus years and run a good operation and paid my dues but am still treated poorly when it comes to these guys, so think what you want as I trained under Ray Sobiak and worked my ass off to get where I am as have many other boat owners.Thats the real dope on long range!PS I dont have an ax to grind with these operators as they are the best thats just the way it is and if we could get beyond this little thing we would all make more money and prosper together .Just a thought
