We got to the harbor at 6:45 to find that the west winds were blowing onshore at about 12 knots. Several boats were already parked in the lot, but almost everyone seemed to be standing around and "talking story". Launched at 7:15 and headed into the white water, headed straight for the pinnacle. Except for a few splashes over the right, front corner of the boat, it wasn't too wet on the way out there.

About 1 mile before the pinnacle the left rigger unclipped and the rod bent over a bit. The fish took a small amount of line out of the reel as I powered up...not much. It ended up being a nice mahi of about 14 lbs.

No one was home at the pinnacle so we headed south to the 1500 fathom pocket. By then the wind had shifted and was coming from the north, and that's when we saw a gnarly dark cloud headed our way. Time to head back in toward Ko Olina. As we passed the 1500 line on the way in, the long center rigger unclipped and that reel started peeling line. The fish wasn't as big as we'd initially thought -- an 18 lb hebi, but we were glad to have two fish in the box during our first trip out this year. We decided to head back in to the barn. It was rough going all the way back against those 15 knot north winds. The waves were steep and breaking in odd directions, almost as if we were making the turn around Kaena Point, but we were just 12 miles outside of Nanakuli! ;)

We got back in just before noon. There weren't many boats out there with us today. I guess a bunch of people called it off and headed back home this morning.

    Aloha, and good fishing,
    Pupule

Nice going on the fish. Glad you could get something in the box in less than ideal conditions.

    Pupule and crew,

Way to venture out there on a not so pleasant day. Good goin' on the mahi and the hebi. Fish in the box is always a good thing.

I was launching at Keehi and some of those boats from Waianae were there and said it was too rough on the west side so they came here. I tried to go out solo, put two lures in and got to about the 100 fathom area. I took a few good slaps sideways and decided I didn't want to chance rolling over so I turned around and went it. Very short day about 30 minutes, better safe than sorry.
