Hey guys,

I just bought a penn fathom 40NLD and spooled it up with 80 pound power pro. I'm having some difficulty picking out a rod to match this reel. What do you guys recommend? I'm planning on using it on a 1.5 day trip in july and a 2.5 day on october.

Thanks

Lots of choices. Budget PCH, Grafftech or Proteus. Calstar and Seeker are the old school standards, can’t go wrong. I like United Composites myself. Don’t forget Phenix, Rainshaddow and probably some more I can’t think of right now 🙄

Best value rod for this reel Okuma PCH 741 XXH

Better sticks 8'0" US Predator if you want to fish mainly 50#/60# leader; 8'0" GP Terminator if you plan to split between 60#/80# leader.

I have the 7'6" US Predator paired with a 40 nld2 love it for mostly 50#/60# fly line or daytime jigs; I also have the 8'0" GP Terminator; powerful stick; paired it with a Mak 15T love it for 60/80# sinker rig.

Just for fun I took the GP Terminator/Mak 15T Halibut fishing last week; brilliant; bounces a 3# cannon ball perfectly.

If you do a search you will find many threads with the same question.

That said I have used mine on a SS6465xh for yoyo I have one on a 8' Predator and another on a 7'6' Raptor both great bluefin set ups.

Assuming you want it to fish #60-#80 for the nice size blue fish I would go with the gp terminator. It is a light weight but incredibly powerful rod. I have a valiant 800 on mine currently and like the feel of that set up.

Since it is a Penn FATHOM 40NLD2 then I’l pair it with the Okuma PCH Custom Rod 7’4” XXH and you will have the best bang for the buck set-up…

If it is a Penn TORQUE 40NlD2 then I’l have it on a United Composites RGP80 Terminator like they said. 😉
