After many years of hard work, I finally hit my business goals and reached the point where I was ready to put my dream boat together. The goal was simple: outfit the fastest boat on the west coast for island style jig fishing, capable of taking 4 guys offshore, or running solo on afternoons where I can leave work early. After much research and deliberating, I chose the Robalo Cayman 246 with a 300 Yamaha.

Once we got the 300 Yamaha propped correctly, our fuel burn is 3mpg @ 30mph at 3900 RPM, with a top speed in the 50s.

I placed my order with Erik Smentek @ Tilly's Marine in Ventura and started going crazy buying every item on Amazon that went along with it. Erik made the process so easy, and subsequent services at their factory authorized yamaha service center have been great too.

At the same time, I began meeting with Joel Bowman @ Beacon Marine Electronics to design my full Garmin Suite, which would include 12" touch screen with thru hull and chirp and side scan, compact reactor autopilot, radar, a fusion stereo system that would satisfy my rap music obsessed ears, and 5 batteries, a 2 bank system to power the starter, etc and a 3 bank battery system that would run my iPilot trolling motor with GPS anchor feature.

I went with the Solid Sea Foam Green Hull Gelcoat and high-speed ablative bottom paint that allows for storage in the slip and on the trailer when we chase tuna down south. Tows easily with my F150.

Joel re-wired all the factory systems here, because we wanted to make sure everything would be perfect when we find ourselves 70 miles out at Clemente.

Next was throwing the lame stock coleman cooler away and adding a cooler slide with the biggest RTIC that would fit.

We keep 100# of ice in the front livewell when we don't need the extra bait storage, and all our tackle and clothes/food/etc in the hatches

Trolling Motor Layout with iPilot GPS

We built a custom cover w/ hatch for protecting all the electronics in the full-height center console...this fits our kill bags, dive gear and fishing gear/clothes for 3 guys on a multi-day trip to the islands...

Added extra rod holders and drink holders up and down the gunwales for a total of 16 rod holders I think...

The rear casting platform doubles as a 3 person seat for long runs, and folds up to access a 20 gallon fresh water tank, and I have room for a 4 man life valise raft too.

The factory covers work great to protect all the electronics, and I got aftermarket covers for the 300 Yamaha and the trolling motor.

People ask if the boat is wet, and the answer is no, unless it's blowing 20 knots sideshore! The boat is 9' wide, and she's got a serious wide stance...

    And...She catches fish!

Hasn't this boat been listed with Kusler Yachts? Awesome boat that I've definitely "built" many times on their site, just curious if you decided to keep it

Pretty funny - i built it a bunch of times on the site too. Add another 40k to their “out the door price” and and you build a boat you can fish on! But hey, still more affordable than a yellowfin!

I’ve had it listed for sale with Zach this winter - I’m thinking about going even bigger since my whole family wants to come every trip now and wants to do more overnight trips... not sure if I am going to own two boats ;)

It's nice in norcal for those sporty days, and long rides to the tuna grounds.

We wish... 250 hp. it would would be in upgrade for sure, with a strong swell and current while loaded up, it can feel a little under powered .. but these darn Yamahas just keep going. 1800 hrs.. Knock knock...on wood.. Not need to spend 25k if we don't have to.

Great boat! I'm eyeing an upgrade to the 206 Cayman but can't justify the 226 since I usually fish by myself.

    Love that seafoam green too!

I fish the 246 by myself all the time. They're super easy to manage.

That's great to hear! For storage reasons, I can't do that big of a boat either.
