Hi Everyone, just got settled home and wanted to post a tidbit of info on our recent trip that just got in this morning

Short report. Well over 100 fish mainly dorado and quality sized yellowtail!

    Longer version.

Departed on Tuesday night (8-2) on the Islander with 23 passengers. Fairly light load. There were about 5 add ons at the last minute. As we motored down, Capt. Shane Slaughter said it would be blowing with big swells. Well he was right. On Wednesday morning, swells were at least 8 feet with 20 kts of wind. Kudos to all the anglers who had a positive attitude and fished in this crummy weather. We paddy hopped for the day until sundown and managed about 50 or so fish. Mainly dorado.

We then headed to Colnett where we would anchor up and relax a bit as the weather was just horrible out offshore.

The next day (Thursday) we puttered around the Colnett area, but the current was just way to strong and tough to stay on the drift. Capt. Shane opted to head south about 140 miles and hope the water got warmer.

Well it payed off, at around 1150 we hit that motherlode paddy. Full of life and most important, full of fish. These dorado wanted to die. They were flying out of the water everywhere and it was nonstop. We fished that paddy for about 1.5 hours and pulled nice grades of dorado and nice sized yellowtail. JP fish went to a female angler (Joanne) that muscled in at least a 25 pound yellow. Great job on her part.

Overall, everyone did a great job fishing and helping each other out and keeping tangles to a minimum. Yes, there were tangles, but we took it in stride and we know it happens on occasion. There wasn't "That Guy" on the boat which was even better.

As for me, I hooked 19 fish and only landed 9 fish. Pretty crappy ratio, but I first started on 20 pound test and worked my way up. For those headed out, the fish are not line shy. I fished 40 pound test all day yesterday and landed most of my fish. We only got 2 or 3 jig strikes which were on a pink feather.
The bluefin are there, but of course not really biting much. I think the season has finally started based on the fact that the wind layed down for us on day 2 and the fishing was great. The water was that bluish purple and 67 degrees. If the weather lays down, I would expect to see limits for the boats headed out.

I would have to say that the fishing was great and the catching was about 50%. I saw just about everyone hook a fish and lose at least one. By day 2, the losses were far less. I think the rocking and rolling of the weather played a bit on that.

A huge Thanks to the crew of the Islander and the anglers that made this a fun trip.

There were a few BD'rs on the boat, so I hope they can post some pics. Time to start cleaning the fish before wifey comes home.

Go out there and get them! Good Luck to all headed out

Unfortunately it was not a fully chartered Rice Bowl trip. It was an open party trip with some giveaways. However we will have an official 8 dayer in October on the Spirit of Adventure.

Pics for sure on that trip. Hope you can wait until then
