On any given day various fish will respond differently. As a usual rule, I start with as fast of a retrieve as possible, even skipping the lure on the surface, for several casts. If no response, I slow down in stages. And with yellowtail, it often takes a "drop deep and burn vertically" to get a response. And if log barracuda are present, they like a lure to be on the surface but just as slow as you can make it wiggle.

I think I got it down for other jigs.

Thanks. I will try a retrieval speed similar to my Salas OPOP jigs which I haven't fished in a long time...

I'll start there as the base.

My Xmas rig when 13 a 7ft Roddy(wrapped by Leon Todd of Calstar fame later), Jigmaster 500
    (with a swift 5/1 retrieve speed....ka wheeeee)
and two Candy Bar Lures. PQ owner/Capt. Eddie McEwen taught me to "slow the hell down" with the Candy Bars...let em "wobble" or fast then slow but not always 1 steady speed. I been fishing Tady and Salas Jigs the same way eons. LOL. Try slowing when close to the boat, SEE the jig's action, try different retrieve speeds til they BITE.

    Thank you!

Yes I agree 100 percent. Change the speed for sure. That's how I do it for sure. That confirms slow as the base speed.

Candy bar is shaped as a lazy swimmer , wider than a Tady 45 , slow to medium retrieve is best , I use them for slow retrieve white seabass fishing which the season is just getting started

IF you slow down, and your rod tip is wobbling, the Candy Bar Lure is too...and more attractive to catching fish over the years. LOL

    I am a non traditionalist.

I do fish all spectra, with 2-4 ft of mono.
Hopefully that and adding a quick clip or brazed ring will compensate for wire.

I will need to crank extra slow with 6 gear ratio reel. :-)

I will still burn it and crank faster after long cast.

Anyone care to post pics of the back of the winning jigs?

I have 4-5, but didn't know what to look for in these when I bought them.

Dont have the time to get out these days honestly...

Also, I have fished some of them, just couldn't get it figured out.

Yes I listen to Danny Wade and etc. I then form my own take on things. What thinking does.

I would say whichever speed gives it the best kick, and adjust from there based on water temps and how aggressive the fish are biting. Cooler water, slow with a good kick. Warmer waters, and if fish are on the chew, medium to fast, as long it still has a good kick.

Every day is different. Generally I'd fish a Candy Bar slow, slow, and slower. In a screaming current you can hold that jig still or barely turn the handle and get barracuda to bite. Throw that brown one 2" from the kelp or a boiler and immediately start a slow methodical retrieve and eventually you'll hang a giant kelp bass.
