Got my airbrush kit in today. Sanded down some 3 N 1 surface irons. Just taking them down with 220 and smoothing with 500 grit. I'll be trying some different patterns and watch alot lure painting videos as I go. Yes I've been watching tons for ideas and learning. I'll be putting new rings and hooks, also new to it as well. These are some old lures I found in one of my boxes. Just gonna make them fir personal use and fish them. I'll post some after pics soon. Until I get really gd I'm not picky about perfection yet. Just that they are smooth and repainted to look gd.

Looking forward to seeing the artwork.

I’ve found this to be a great alternative to sanding. I coat the jig generously and leave it in a ziplock overnight. The paint wipes right off. Way easier than sanding!

Did you sand by hand/dry paper? Looking forward to color combos & finished jigs 🤙🏻
Yes, it's automotive wet dry paper. Sanded by hand dry. This is my first time. I'm no artist by any means. But I am a painter. Mostly doing cabinet refinneshes. So I'm sure I can make some decent repaints with lil practice. I see these irons mostly just simple patterns when new. So I can copy few of their colors, once and few I seen on YouTube. Here are few patterns I'm aiming for. Especially the mackerel type with few styles of colors. And some just like that mackerel.

unless you love sanding them, get a small plastic tub (not too deep) and let them soak acetone or probably other strippers, then you can basically wipe them clean with paper towel (wear gloves so doesnt soak into your hands - change them a few times)

I assume acrylic paints. Use a Sealer for metal(automotive) or it won't bond well. I use Autoborne by Createx. White, black or Silver Seal. The Silver Seal provides excellent refractive surface. Be prepared to clean the brush, alot.

Yeah, I was thinking that. We have 55 gal drums at work. Our concrete coatings teams use it to clean tools used fir mixing the epoxy. I just sanded a few. They sand pretty easy.

    They certainly look cool!

But do they swim better, or worse?
I imagine they would swim the same. Alot won't be all fancy and detailed. Just some mackerel looking ones like above. Some backvto original and some with different stripe colors.

The best catching irons have all the paint chewed off… fancy paint jobs are for your benefit, not the fishes! But go ahead and knock yourself out, you’re not just creating a fishing lure, you’re creating art!
They are older, hooks rusted. Rings need replaced. Might as well repaint them. I'm not looking to do any fancy art. Just bring em back to life. Yeah, ill put some cool colors and mixes. Who knows. Might find something new thats hot. But, it's really just something to do.

First attempt. Gotta put on clear coat and rings and hooks. I'm cool with that at Catalina. Practicing on the smaller jigs first. I have bunch ready to paint. Nothing fancy. But when they get chewed all up. I can strip and start over.

Nice! Now gotta work on mint/white FTW!
That green and white one above in pics is a mint. Looks darker than is but if you zoom in you can see the color better. It's pretty close to the tady 45 mint I bought. Lilboff, but not much. Just gotta clear coat them now

Clear coating with a rattle can?
I'm not sure. Haven't bought anything yet. Didn't come with kit. So that's nxt step after I get a handful painted. Here's 3 done ready for clear coat. Basically copying the hot colors and ill add few odd ones fir experiment.

Not perfect but they are close enough. Not only am i enjoying this. But when I catch fish on them ill be even more stoked. Mine compared to store bought. I think after finished, as long as my rings and hooks hold, they will be gd. I'm new to ring glazing as well. The whole purpose of doing this is to learn. Then I can easily just repaint, re ring and hook every year. Be like new irons. Just change up a color mix here and there to find hot colors.
