What reel would you put on a Calstar grafighter 800xl DH? Fishing both plastics and bait... Trinidad 14A or Tranx 400

I can’t see the 800xl for plastics..For me it’s a bait rod. As for reels, maybe the tranx 300. I would put a Fathom 12 on it for bait or similar size reel and maybe a Avet sx or the smallest Tern

X2 for the Newell 220. However the new Daiwa Saltist star drag looks really interesting. Like an affordable version of a Saltiga.....

Neither. They’re both way, way too expensive for this line class. Just get a Daiwa Sealine 20. It will fish 15, 20 or 25 lb line great with no issues. Put some Carbontex drag washers in for an even better reel. You can pick up a used one in great shape for less than $80 bucks probably.

Fish Newell 220 on LM 8 and LM9 thought to maybe fish Trinidad 12A or 14A or a Tranx on a 800XL but a new Tern 300 might be something

    I have used a Calcutta 300 or 250 for bass(etc) on my 800xl 15 and 12 lb line.
    a saltiga 15 or trn12 for 20lb on the 800xlh.
    hope that helps

To fish live bait you want an open faced reel, your trinidad will work, but the 800xlh really shines with that newell 220 or diawa slosh20, (my go to up here in the Channel Islands). You need to be able to backpeddle the reel and feel the line. The Tranx , Lexa, Toros etc. don't allow that with the small spool and levelwind.
Your tranx is the reel for plastics....
