Lots of recommendations for the fathom 2 speed.
I ran a 25nld2 on that particular rod rating and 40nld2 on a step above rod rating (40-100).
You can’t go wrong with either 25nld2/40nld2 for the 30-80, but I preferred the lighter setup.

What line did you fish on it? Pull on any tuna with it?

Axis 30-80 and 25nld2: 65# braid to 40# topshot. This was my workhorse setup, I caught everything you would encounter on a overnight trip.

Axis 40-100 and 40nld2: 80# braid to 60# topshot. brought with me, but always grabbed the 25nld2 setup first.

Yeah I think the guy was fishing straight 80lb mono on this particular reel.

It was mostly intended to fish 30-pound mono, with enough redundancy built in to go with maybe 50-pound mono at the absolute top end.

I was looking at the 30 because it has a higher gear ratio. I have a 1.5 day leaving next Friday and this is pretty helpful.

What about IPT? To me at least, the ratio between the IPT and gear ratio are more important then either stand alone.

The 40N is a better reel for undertaking heavier loads on its gears... but the 30 is a smaller, lighter reel designed for lighter loads.

The 25/30 both do 38” and the 40 does 42” with a bit more drag. I don’t think I want to put the 40 on this rod. I may get a 40 for a beefier rod. But the 25/30 will probably be fine on this rod.

The 30 is also 229$ on Amazon right now

What I’m getting at, is that each reel performs differently based on gear ratio, not IPT. Something I learned a long time ago. A 30 is going to be better either way... performs better on 40lb and light 50lb. Full 50lb the 40N will knock the socks off just about anything.
