Wow! This is a long post. But if you’re bored or interested, here it is.

Both my smaller two speeds that I use for 30# and 40# topshots took quite a beating on the last trip. On a school of mixed size Yellowfin at Alijos Rocks, I had grabbed the 30# outfit as it had slowed down and Captain suggested it. I got bit and whatever it was didn’t like it so it took off at a pretty serious pace and before I could remember that part about drag increasing as spool diameter decreases, time to back off a little on the drag lever, the line broke. I wound in nothing but braid, the FTHXN15LD2 had been filled with 40# J-Braid and I had about 25-30 feet of fluorocarbon tied onto the end. Well it didn’t break at the RP knot I had used, so I decided to spool on some 30# monofilament and tie on a short piece of fluorocarbon.

Then, can’t remember when or where, I was fishing the 40# outfit and I got buzzed off by somebody’s line crossing mine. I reeled in what I had left of the braid it had been filled with and set it aside, grabbed the backup 40# outfit and got back to fishing. That night I was up until just past 11:00 fixing problems. I spliced some 60# Hollow Blue Cortland C-16 onto the solid and filled it up with that. Added a loop to loop topshot onto that FTH25NLD2 and then realized I had come on the trip with only one 40# topshot, Sato crimped into some Seaguar Premier. So, using some of that C-16 Hollow I proceeded to make a couple of wind-ons with loops. Off to bed.

After traveling east to the Ridge, we fished a couple of spots before heading up to Hippolito where we got into the Yellowtail action. After we had our fill of that, Ray took us offshore, looking for the right kelp that would be holding a good quantity of quality Dorado. Eventually, after checking numerous paddies, he found the right one. Not one of a string of several in a row, this one was all by itself. When the smoke cleared, both of those 30 and 40 pound outfits had been cut off again. Combat zone couldn’t hold a candle to the chaos we saw. But shit happens, right? ;)

The mono topshot was gone from the 30# reel so, I topped it off with quite a lengthy topshot and just tied on a hook, thinking I would get bit just fine. The 40# reel still had the hollow connected to the solid with enough left for me to splice the 60# hollow onto it and fill it back up, again. Put a loop in the end and connected up another fluorocarbon topshot.

Thankfully, that was the extent of the damage and I finished the trip in good shape. Got home and bought a 1/2 pound spool of 50# mono as the next trips will no doubt include a fair dose of fishing Wahoo, maybe some YoYo iron. Also grabbed a spool of 30# Blue Label, some crimps and had to order the rest online. Amazon had what I needed, 300 meter spool of that 40# J-Braid. All set to get things fixed up for the 7 day on the Independence, holy shit, I’d better get to it, three weeks from now I’ll be headed south for that trip. Quality problem, have to go fishing… :)

Always something to re spool or get fixed after a trip. Sounds like other than line problems, the fathoms held up well. Thinking for my 10 day next year, 3 50 lb outfits, 2 40lb outfits, and 2 30 lb outfits….in addition to 60, 80, and 100 lb outfits.

Thank you for the write up~ for those of us who are interested, what was the size range of the yft at the rocks?
I’d say 25-40 pounds. Some smaller ones were released.

Great report and read. Sounds like a bigger one nailed ya on 30#? At least they're biting. Get
back and go gettum. I'm in recovery too, in PT a few more weeks after a sprained knee. Looks like nothing torn at least. Look forward to your reports and reading!!

God I Love fishing straight Mono.
Got so used to fishing short (20-25’) topshots, I had more backlash problems. Not like casting jigs with 40# or 50#. It was kinda goofy, but I managed. And yes, it’s great fishing monofilament.

Thanks for the post as I fall back on straight mono if your top shot is mono anyways Problems getting zipped and loss of to much line just spool up new line at night I used to do that nightly at the Lupe with 40lb and the feeling of fresh mono to start your day is a mental boost. Won’t claim I caught the most on trips but some I did and won jackpots . Keep it simple and less knots and stress over failures from such technics that seem to be needed to get a bite nowadays, or so we think

I think I'm going to bring a reel spooled with 65# 4 strand power pro just for those mahi bites. Too much line tangling to put my nice 40 or 50# hollow into pieces. Works great as a kelp cutter too...

I generally like longer mono top shots on my lighter gear when bait fishing. The tangles are going to happen and I try to mitigate the damage.

Here’s a follow up. I got myself a spool of 60# Momoi G3 Hollow Braid and attacked the wreckage from the last two trips. I mean I had blue and white, old and new, solid and hollow all jumbled up together. I had cannibalized some of the spectra from a reel that didn’t get used, in order to get back in the water. I retrieved that and spliced it back onto where it belonged. Stripped of a few yards of white hollow 60# in questionable condition, three splices… That was my FTH25NLD2, and it’s topped off with a single splice and fresh Momoi.

By the way, a value at around $85-90 for the 600 yard spool, I’m pleased with the Momoi Gen3. It splices easily and will work well for inserting 40-60# fluorocarbon to make topshots.

I'm not doing any splices anymore. Previously I had a whole kit for creating splices using nail knots. I would then make up larger pre-made leaders for 80 - 150# and splice those on as needed.

No more....FG knot only going forward. I have sat at my home desk for the last 2 months tying the knot again and again....multiple different varieties of leaders and pound test. Most of these included attaching my lure to a spring scale and pulling until the whole thing breaks somewhere.

Along the way I lost a lot of hooks...as the line breaks the hook would go flying into never - never land...switched to using a small jig which I could find every time. Broke a spring scale. Found out I don't really want to pull on 100# test until destruction.....jig flying back into my shin..... I eventually just tested the connections until they bottomed out the spring scale + a bit.....my drag is never set at higher that 50#'s.

Leaving the whole line splicing gig at home ....only tool I need is Spectra cutters and Knot pullers......the simple life!

OH....what If I need to spice on some hollow to hollow leader.....ugg.....ok I will bring my needles.....

Loop needles are all I use. I’ve gotten pretty handy at splicing hollow to hollow. Same with making loops on the end of the hollow spectra. I totally prefer hollow for just the reasons I outlined in my repair jobs. Gets me back in the water.

I can tie an FG faster than I can splice....I can splice pretty quickly.

    Steve,
See you and every other Long Range Boat in the fleet next week. I just checked the schedule and every single Long Range Boat has an 8 - 11 day trip that is out during the first of November. Those Alpha spots are going to be used up....will need to find new fish!

Looks like we’re going to have to learn to get along. They’re pretty good at sharing information and letting each other know what they have planned. Last trip was a 7 day on the Independence, on our way up to San Pablo for Yellowtail, Matt said we were going to use our reservation. Same spirit of cooperation in August on my 8 day on the Angler. I’m going to be concentrating on trying for Wahoo as the Yellowfin and Yellowtail bite pretty good, no reason to panic. And if I don’t score a limit of either of those Yellow Fish, I’m OK with that.

Dorado? No thanks, as I’m going to be dropping darker colored jigs on the paddies, hoping for Wahoo. And after this one at 26 pounds, I’m good

I always bring a 40lb rig with 100 yards of mono for such situations. I typically fish 15-25' topshots.

Many times you have a narrow window when they are biting good, or I just feel just too damm lazy to fiddle around.

Some people spend too much time at the tackle racks instead of at the rail.

That's the way I do it Dave. On the lighter gear I like a longer shot of mono. My dexterity isn't so hot (rheumatoid arthritis) so if BillW is on board he ties the FG's for me, if not I just use what the crew likes best.

Nice dorado Steve. I never keep them, only eat them on the boat. Got one about that size on the surface iron by mistake. We ate him at the captains table the next night, really good.

I know Mike Nall is a huge advocate of the FG Knot. Maybe I’ll ask him.
