First off this is 2 years out... We are financially responsible... so planning is a must. My wife is a CPA... ha ha
She cares about the numbers first and my happiness somewhere down the line from there...

I am an original member of bloodydecks.com, I fished a center console Tail Chaser for years, and switched to hobie outback... Married and older now, I want a go get some tuna type boat.

My idea is something trailerable I have a newer Dually... I'm comfortable towing an extremely heavy 40ft toy hauler.
    I want a fishing machine...
My wife wants a comfortable luxury boat to read on... She fishes but wants to be comfortable.

I want to balance comfort and economy, I want to afford to take the boat out regularly. Realistically I want to fish all that SoCal has to offer... Freezer filling trips, tuna, islands... you know.
I want to be able to carry 2 kayaks, so I can spend the weekend fishing Catalina.
    I want safety.
After visiting the boat show seeing 200,000, 300,000, and up boats... my wife liked the Blackfin boats but wanted bigger and somewhere to sleep and a kitchen.

I like the Wooldridge boats but.... they are missing something...

    I also like the Whalers.

Anyway the wife is expecting a 175,000 to 200,000 price tag. Does anyone make a good custom boat in that range?

I suspect that I will be buying used, which the wife scoffs at ha ha but realistically it will get me more of a boat.

Don't forget you have to a great head(bathroom)! Just because you have 200k to spend doesn't mean you have to spend it. Check resale value ! Good luck!

I love the Whalers! Broke my cherry on Both Jim's and Rick Babu's montauks! I think the new stuff is right up our alley but... price is still on the higher side and fuel economy is still on the higher side... that said I'd feel safe nearly anywhere. The comforts are not lacking.

You mention you want to be trailable, how large are you willing to trailer, 29X10. 30X11, 34X12, 12,000, 15,000, 18,000 lbs.
Meeting all your wants will require some flexibility, you have already stated you have the skills.
    Good luck.
PS: does the wife have a Sister with the same attitudes.

So... the price came from the boat show... Been showing her boats for years, and boiling it down... she wants to be comfortable. I've been showing her realistic boats... I love the donzi's, older whalers, rock harbors, etc... She didnt know prices... she paid attention at the show, loved the Cutwater, everglades, and bl as coffin boats... we had a discussion a few days later about Wooldridge boats... I love em... anyway I said they are too expensive and she said what's expensive... I said they were were around 200 and she said ohh not too bad I was thinking we would spend way more... Honestly ai almost lost it! I would be happy for much much less.

I can tow whatever... I live in Claremont, so I could go north or south... Realistically I'd launch out of long beach for Catalina, and san Diego for points south... ha ha I've been learning about wide load permits and it just seems like an extra day off work would make that a non issue?

Seems cool but for a cat doesn't the fuel economy seem low? Or am I mistaken

A used 30ft Ocean Sport or 29 Radon might fit the bill. Usually around 200k used and fairly easy to trailer.
