Quick report, I need a "recovery nap"!
Captain Cameron at the wheel, with Captain Andrew and the rest of the Vagabond's excellent crew down on the deck.
Departed at 10 AM, motored out near SCI, scattered fish during daylight hours, landed 3 or 4 each day, mostly on 100gr. dart-type jigs.
After dark, chased schools of mostly 80-90 pounders, a few bigger to 140, and a few smaller-grade of maybe 50 pounds.
Depth control important with the jigs, but use the smallest possible jig to get to the number the skipper calls out. Pretty good action if you were on your toes.
Basic rule of thumb for jigs that worked well for me at night:
150-250 feet- Williamson Kensaki 170gr. [with ST66 treble hook]
250-325 feet- Williamson Kensaki 280gr.
325-400 feet- Rip Roller 400gr.
Best "bite time" was around 10:00 PM- 3:00 AM.
Daytime- Williamson Gomame 100gr. [with ST66 treble hook]
Other boats had some plunker-style daytime fishing on flylined baits, but we had only a brief flurry of that.
We also hooked two of what were presumably large makos at night on jigs, based on the shredded condition of the line.
Food and crew of the Vagabond were exemplary as always!

Will add some pics when I wake up later!

Great report. Question. Was anyone using the 16 ounce torpedo sinker jigs and were they effective?

Curious as I have not heard much about them as of late after being so popular and effective on previous trips...

Thanks

I cant speak to this trip but on the PQ a month ago the sinker jigs were VERY effective.

As always, I check carefully to see what all of the rods on the boat are rigged with, and did not see any tied on.
I had a couple in my box, but did not deploy them.

Should add, an increasingly popular trend on bluefin trips is spending a few hours targeting rockfish at the 60 Mile Bank, which has re-opened after many years.
We did very well, and it gave an opportunity to demonstrate "Slow Pitch Jigging".
Most of the effort was at 450-500 feet, though we did drift "off the edge" into 750 feet for a few minutes a couple of times.
Not only was it very easy for me to reach 450-500 easily with a 280gr. Kensaki and my Fathom 10XN filled with 20 pound braid, but I even managed to hit bottom and get a bocaccio at the 750 foot mark. Was hoping for a black cod!
Still cool to know it can be done.

Steve,

Looks like you had a wonderful trip. It was nice chatting with you prior to your trip. Is that the new thinner spectra you were testing out in the photo?

The "24 hour fishing cycle" required for these bluefin also presents some unique challenges for the crew. We all need to be very cognizant of the additional stress on them.

Should add, this was my first opportunity to use the FTHII40NLD2 on bigger grade fish, and I was very pleasantly surprised to feel first hand how much additional power the new lower "Low" ratio of 1.9-1 gives. I am nearly 70 years old, so my days of muscling fish are long gone. When you hook one, they are still going to run, but once they have settled down, pushing the "easy button" basically allows me to straight-grind the fish right to the boat. Truly amazing. You could always do this with an International like a 36 ounce 16VISX, but the 40N only weighs 24 ounces.
