Ok so about 5 or so years ago I bought a BNIB progear YT special. It's gold and aperently I NEEDED IT. At the time🤦‍♂️. Once obtaining it, I changed the drags out to the 5+1 ultimate upgrade set. Filled it with something like 4-500 yards of 65lb braid. Replaced the clamp with a backbone rod clamp. And put it back in the box. Sweet....🤦‍♂️ We're it's been ever since
Well every time I pull this puppy out I just can't seem to match it. Pair it. Whatever. It truly is a narrow 4/0. It's not a little reel. It's a lot to Palm.
Sure I've read stories and threads from over a decade ago. But is anyone usuing them now? What can I push this thing to. It's a pretty solid reel, appears tanked and ready to tangle. What rods do you guys who have one pair it with. What's the biggest fish you've caught on it? I've always personally fell back to my 625 for YoYoing, do to how small the 625 is. Anyone got any awesome stories with their big Progear YT special. I've wanted to fish it for ever but have never made the conscious decision to add it to the daily user reels. All info and stories would be greatly appreciated!

I know it's not a wahoo special but I feel it's adequate for them?
Anybody else?

It's sad it just sits in a box on the shelf. I'm in need of some motivation. I'm a stickler when it comes to pairing rod with reel.
........IT MUST BE PERFECT.......

The world famous “tank” from Alan Tani.com is going with me on my 8 day on the 8th. I’m handing it off to another guy on the 18th when we get back so it can go with him on his 8 day too. It’s a tricked out double dog YTS with souped up drags and a custom handle. I’ll yo-yo with it on a 6465h for old times sake.

It’s a tricked out, effectively, fully Accurized narrow 4/0, more like the size of a Baja Special than a YTS. If the spool bearings are clean and lubed with something like tsi-321 it should cast as well as anything in that class. Sure, it should be able to handle a 100#er. I have its baby brother, the 545.

I don’t know about 100# fish. Hammer the drag down with your dikes, sure there’s a possibility. The handle might feel rough on a fish that size.
I’ve never used mine for much other than yo-yo.

He said it has a 5+1 drag stack. I'd pull on it with a scale and see what it can do. My 545 has a 7 stack drag, stainless gear sleeve, double dogs and a power handle!

yea that handle is a handful! At least it's comfy on the yoyo

I just dug up the old original drags I've got the 7 stack. 👍🏼👍🏼 It's been so long since I replaced them. I normally always stack my progears with the 5+1's but I've its been so long🤦‍♂️. Big reels, big drags.

Back in the day I had a set of 6 black progears and used them for everything. The 454 for dropper loop yellows at alijos, the lupe, all over. Flylinig a big mac, school bluefin and yft. Jigs for wahoo. Was the swiss army knife of reels for 40-50. It had those funky thick drag washers that got all chattery after a while. Replaced with smoothies that sucked less
These days with all the custom parts available you could trick it out to fish 80-100lb no problem.
Would I fish it today? I think I'd want a 2 speed. Still be a good reel for dropper loop though

I got admit! After reading your post. I jumped off BD and started looking for all the tricked out parts. But just reading that you took it to the rocks and to lupe without adding a disaster story gives me great hope. Those YT down there are a different bread of mean, And class! Plus you've fished wahoo on it.👍🏼👌🏼 That's what I'd really like to use it for. Instead of my Newell 533....

Now off to slowly acquire up all the SS parts I need for it. Luckily they are plentiful, It appears!

You can pretty much upgrade a 113h or Jigmaster until the only thing left that's original is the name.

Yea I've got an accuplated out jigmaster 500. And the only original part left is it's star. It's so far away from being the original penn 500 I bought decades ago. But this was the "thing" to do. Back in the day when tanking out our Penn's were all we really had. Back when the LR trips rails were lined up with laced out Penns!👍🏼 Those were the days!

It's still my go to 40lb Tady slinger

That Progear was a favorite of mine for a long time(till I picked up a Wahoo Special). I fished mine on a Seeker CJBF 70H and mainly used it for yo yo. Best fish on it was a 60# yellowfin that but my 6X.

Nice fish! I was just looking at a old SS-CJB60H. No joke 👍🏼 But a 60lb YF is a perfect size battle! For this reel I feel
