Hi B'Der's,

Progear Albacore Special 540 for sale. This classic reel is rated for 30# of drag by the mfg, and has a capacity of 350yds of 30# mono line. This is a Penn 99 sized reel, and based on my measurements of the spool, is about the same size as the Penn Baja Special, Penn Torque 300, and the Torium 30. The reel has the 5.1 gears and is a tank, maybe a little lighter than the Torque 300 but a tank. Includes reel and rod clamp.

I am selling this as I have too many reels in this size class and would like to find a good home for this with someone that wants to put it to good use. Would prefer a local sale in the LA area, but if someone out of the area really wants it can work out shipping.

Asking $210.

Tight lines.

It’s more Jigmaster 500 capacity rather than 99. Great reels!

Here are some measurements that I took of various reels that I owned that compare to the 540:

Reel................Spool Height (MM).....Spool Width......Spool Volume (cu. cm)
Torque 300...........63...................................41.......................55
Penn Baja............69....................................37.......................56
ProGear 540........62. ..................................38.......................53

The other measurements that I made were the handle lengths and the gear ratio, etc. The metric that I think is important is the distance the hand cranks vs. the amount of line that is reeled in. I calculated this for the various handle settings for all of these reels. Here is a list of these same reels for the ratio of distance the hand travels vs. the line retrieve (Lowest handle setting):

Reel...............Ratio of Travel to retrieve
Torque 300.............2.5
Penn Baja..............1.9
ProGear...................2

So the Torque tends to be a faster retrieve, but maybe not as good of a wench, er winch, or whatever. The Baja and the Progear are similar. Progear is a slightly smaller package but similar performance.

Anyway, some guys think more winch more better....

More winch, more better... my 540 has 3.6:1 gears so more winch... better for bait! I got those gears after the fact and still have the stock 5:1’s. A 99 is a mid-sized Jigmaster equivalent to a Newell 332. I have a tricked out 99 too with a Tib frame/spool Alan Tani handle, drag enhancements, etc.

The 540 with the 3.6 gears would be great for west coast fly lining for sure. My decipherin' shows that the ratio for the hand to the line would be around 1.44. More winch for sure. I have one of the old Diawa STT40s which has a ratio of about 1.66. The Fathom 40NLD2 is about 1.05 in low gear for comparison.

I thought the 99 was a little taller and wider than the jigmaster 501. Wish I had an example of each as the different form factors and their use is interesting.

The 99 is the mid-width Jigmaster in between the 501 and 500. Same size as the Newell 332.

Interestingly the mfg specs on the 540 are 350/30#, and the shimano 20 is 280/30#. I took measurements of the spool for each of them:

Reel................Spool Height (MM).....Spool Width......Spool Volume (cu. cm)
ProGear 540........62. ..................................38.......................53
Shimano 20..........57....................................39.......................52

So the spool volume estimate for both of the reels is similar. So while the 540 has a taller spool, it has a larger arbor (approx 17mm vs. 14mm), so the volume estimate is very close.

The funny thing is that line capacity should be proportional to spool volume, but in this case (as in others) they are different.

The 540 next to the shimano 20 might look a bit larger, but actually is about the same capacity. I would have thought that the 540 was closer to the shimano 30 due to the mfg specs, and based on that it is.

In actual real life with braid they are about the same. The old 20 I had I used with 40#, and could easily be a 50# reel. The 540 is also a great 40-50#+ reel.
