why are the 255s insuch high demand...the list of buyers went on and on? this is comming from a non progear guy. thanks
Actually, both of these reels are in high demand. If you haven't held one in your hand, imaging fishing with a Penn Squidder size reel with the stopping power of a jigmaster or better because you don't have to worry about the frame warping or plastic side plate craking. I get an easy 18# of drag from my PG255 with SS Newell gear set and a 5+1 Carbontex drag stack I normally fish these with 50# braid and will usually have my drags set at 10-13#s.
PG545 is the size of a 2/0 reel with Penn's 113H guts, except the gear ratio is 4:1. A great little reel for many uses.
Note that all of these PG reels are braid capable even when Braid was at it's very early stages. I cannot say the same with a Penn.
Therefore, considering, if you got your hands on a 2/0 reel. Purchase Accurate Magnum sideplates, Accurate frame, that will cost you maybe $300 that is screwed together. The PG545 has a one piece, solid aluminum frame with integral aluminum non-drive side plate and a keyed drive aluminum side plate that has a 2 screw takedown and can work perfect with one sideplate screw for $200ish or less. That is why I fish the older PG reels.
