I am taking a jigmast 500 with 30lb mono, a lexa 400hd with 65 braid topped with 75 or so yards of 40 mobo for throwing iron, a fathom 40nld2 with 80 braid topped with 60 mobo or course that can be changed. I will borrow a heavier setup from the boat in case we get into real big stuff.

The question I have is with my fathom 25n star drag. Do I fill it with 65 braid and use short top shots, or leave room for 100 yards of 40 mono?

I know I will be using floro at times and not sure if having the long top shot and more knots is neccessary.

Try adding a 40 pound 2-speed, short topshot.

You don’t need a 100 yard topshot unless you’re going to use it for throwing jigs. A hundred foot piece of mono is all you need unless you want maximum capacity then fill it with thin braid and a 4’ piece of fluorocarbon. I’d check with the office as to it’s destination and if Alijos or the Ridge are in the mix. If that’s the case get yourself some 35# Knot2Kinky and some black rings for wire leaders. Wahoo are a blast. What time of year is your trip?

My Lexa 400 HD is loaded with 50# spectra with a 3’ 40# leader. I’ve caught YT, YFT and 3 Wahoo on it. Probably go with a 50# topshot on the 40n. I’ve done 6 10 day trips in the fall and 30-40 is what you use most with 50# for Wahoo bombs and yoyo.

Use the lexa as is for fishing bait and fill the 25n with braid leaving enough room for a 100 yard top shot for fishing the jig

A lot has changed in 12 years and titanium wire is one of them. You can get multiple fish out of 1 leader which is a good thing.

Being your trip is the end of June you could find yourself chasing everything!!

As stated earlier a 2 speed reel ffor 40-60 would be a nice addition. Hard to beat Penn Fathom 40’s price wise. Have fun prepping and go get um!

Late June then 30-50 will do it unless you need heavier for some jumbo BFT.

I have a fathom 40 with 80 broad and 60 mono. already have 30 40 80 and 100 floro ready to go. I need more jigs, some wire, wire sleeves, rings, crimpers, and who knows what else.

one of the reasons i like to go late June is the chance at multiple species. and it's the week of my 40th.

The odds of more species goes up in Sept. Late June is mostly YT.

My June experiences are on 5 days. Back in the day that meant Cedros/Benitos which are closed these days. Currently on a 7 day you spend 3 days on the Ridge or at the Rocks or stay somewhere north of Cedros.

My June trips to the rocks have been YF and YT no wahoo but that doesn't mean they haven't been there.

If it were me I would skip the wire for jigs and buy some 130lb fluorocarbon and use that on my wahoo jigs. For bait you can buy the pre-done rigs at Fishermans Landing

I have been on a June 7 or 8 day trip almost every year for the last 6 or 7 years. Usually it is 50 hours straight south to the 23 spot in the middle of the ridge where you catch tons of yellowtail and yft in the 18 to 22 lb range. I usually just fish a Trinidad 16 or 20 filled with straight 25lb mono. If the fish are a little picky I use an Avet MXJ 2 speed filled with 50lb spectra and I fish short 25 or 30 fluro leaders.
It is a lot of fun to catch the yellows on surface jigs and I use a trininad or torium 30 filled with 40 lb mono for throwing the jigs. The yellows hit very good on yoyo jigs and I use an Avet HX or LX 2 speed for that. I fill them with 65 or 80 spectra with a 40 or 50 lb fluro leader.
If wahoo or bigger tuna are around you can use the HX or LX on them. The only time you might need a bigger outfit is if you stop at Guadalupe but that doesn't usually happen on June trips. To fish Guadalupe you would have to pay the $200+ fees prior to leaving and you would have to check in and out at Ensenada plus June is very early for tuna and the sharks would be horrible.
A few years ago Cedros and Benitos were the destination on 6 and 7 days trips but now it seems that it is usually a straight run to the rocks or the ridge. If those areas are slow you might end up fishing a day or two locally for the blufin if they are still around.

I decided to pick up a Proteus xxh for my fathom 40. That will allow me to leave the lexa on the pch h and the 25n on the pch xh.

Anything bigger will.be a loaner rod.
