Left Sunday night on a 1.5 day trip on the Pacific Queen. Boat was absolutely full with 34 anglers.

Amazing that in October there are still plenty of folks traveling from FAR AWAY to try and land one of these wily Bluefin. There was a great mix of serious locals both male and female, and the most feared never been in the ocean fishermen.
Captain Gavin gives us the safety speech, laying down a preliminary game plan, along with tackle suggestions, and away we go.

The moon was full, and the ocean was like a sheet of glass for our ride out. We stopped in the dark on meter marks, but what ever it was did not want to play. There were people working flatfalls, fly lined sardines, and sinker rigs. Absolutely no takers in terms of game fish.

We made a few short moves, saw fish on the sonar, but no takers. Finally Gavin gets something on the meter and tells the deckhand to brail a few scoops of bait. The madness was not instantaneous, but it quickly evolved to 5 of us on the bow doing a gnarly dance. Captain and crew performed more magical moves than I have seen in quite some time. Literally the 5 of us were doing a tuna tango for the better part of an hour.

As everyone worked their fish close to color, one angler had his reel seat fail and he was now in the crazy position of having the reel in one hand, and the rod in the other. Gavin and crew stepped in and basically hand lined his fish the last few feet to gaff. I had a fish on, but that would have made a memorable photo sequence. Attached are a few photos from the trip..Enjoy the fish porn..

Excellent. Three of my favorite crew members right there - PQ is always a winner!

Absolutely full with 34 anglers.....

My very first trip out of San Diego was on the PQ in the 70’s and we went out with 72 anglers.

Thanks for the report.

I had a couple of friends on that trip and they said the bft were 40-50 range. The 3 of them pulled in 12 of the 60 fish landed.

Cool pics Bro, thanks.

That's about right. Pick a good bait, handle bait with care, hook bait appropriately for the situation, use right size hook, line, leader, and don't cast in the middle of a bunch of lines. All that adds up to higher catch ratios. I was on a trip recently. Went up to the captain and said:
it seems like we are doing pretty well,
he said, we have 14 fish,
I replied, well I have 5, my roommate has 5, how is that possible?
You guys are the only ones catching them.
There were 25 people on the trip...

Late response...just noticed this post. I was on this trip too. I think everyone on the boat had at least one fish. I had 9...kept two bft, one yft and handed off 3 bft and 3 yft to guys that weren't hooking up. The bft were the 40-50lb class. The yft were 25-35lb. Great group of people to fish with and absolute stellar crew. My two buddies had 2 bft each. Awesome trip overall. I actually did get bit in the dark when we stopped the boat when I was soaking a whole squid I brought with me, but the thing came unbuttoned. Nice fishing with you!

Tight lines...
Don

Don, what a fantastic trip and honored to have shared your birthday with you on the PQ hammering BFT. Crew was some of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of fishing with. When chaos ensued they were absolute magicians at restoring order, that crew is exceptional!!! We got to share the rail with some really cool people too which made the trip that much better. I was even happy for that nutsack that was well within iron range to finally land one on a popper. Probably 10 other sporties working this general area and he sits on us all afternoon & into the evening? Guess the word is out the PQ is a fishy boat. Lol
