Hello everyone,
Leaving next Sunday for a 1.5 on the pacific queen. First time on this boat and hope my buddy and I get our first BF. I am trying to bring as many setups as possible so my buddy doesn’t have to rent so many rods. Here is what I plan on taking

#1 Penn fathom 25NLD2 with a Teremar TMC-70 HB 30-60. Spooled with 50 pound braid and over 100ft of 50 pound mono. Maybe a flyline rig?

#2 Trinidad 20A with a calstar 800H 30-60. 65 pound braid, plan on adding 50ft of 50 pound mono.

#3 Makaira 15T with a calstar 700XH 40-100 with 80 lb braid, plan on adding 50-100ft 80lb mono. (Night rig for my buddy?)

#4 Makaira 30 with a calstar 775XXH 80-130. Spooked with 130 pound hallow braid with about 100 ft of 100 pound mono.

I plan on using the mak 30 for night time even though it may be overkill for the current size of fish. Should I drop line size to get my jig down quicker? Should I risk using my Trinidad as a flyline setup or even sinker rig? Thanks for the input.

Bring some 40# and 30# floro for bait. I use my trini20a for 40# jig and sometimes flyline bait its got many tuna up to 75# ! You are on the right boat for sure!!!

I have heard this boat gets em. Even happened to notice a random 1 spot open at the end of may on their calendar for an overnight trip and booked that too.

Based on the 20-40lb bft that have been caught in the last week

30# flyline
50-60# daytime jig (sniper, smaller flat falls, knife jig, etc)
100-130# nightime jig

With that being said every day is different. May stumble across the bigger models and need a 40-50# flyline, and 60-80# sinker rig. 100-130 for night time should handle anything at the moment.

Most guys will bring 6-8 setups to cover the basis

Coming from Montana , I have had to do a lot of internet learning about fishing on the boats out of San Diego. Still wet behind the ears but this is what I have for setups and I have done 4 1.5 to 3 day trips
    Andros 5n on a Pch medium as a 25 to 30lb
( worked great on fly line 10/20lb yellowtail)
    Mak 15 sea on a pch H as a 40 to 50
(Dropped to 30lb once for a 20lb bluefin and worked just fine)
    Mak 15 T on a pch xh for a 50/60 setup
( used it for yo/yo , not perfect but caught fish, and some fly line for yellowtail)
Mak 20 sea on xxxh for 100lb setup
( fished a little for flatfall but haven’t hooked anything yet. Sure is pretty to look at!! Lol)

I have a 3 day on the Pacific Queen booked for July 11. These are what plan on taking and don’t feel like I am lacking. Hoping I get a chance to work out that Mak 20.

Use 40-50# for daytime sinker rigs. I was out on the PQ on 4/15-17. Most fish were on sinker rigs. 8 oz worked best. Maybe a couple on flyline. I go with 50# for Colt Snipers. Nothing on jigs at night for us. Fish were 20-90#.

What size hooks were you using for sinker rigs? Did anyone caught on 60/80lbs leader? I’m on the New Lo-Ann tomorrow night and I think they’re catching more during night time jigs fishing.

I used the same 2/0 I was flyling with. I should've gone with 4/0 for the sinker rig since the bait isn't really swimming anyway.

I tied 40-50# fluoro to my 40-50# top shot.

My heavy rigs go with 25’ of fluoro to my braid.

Now it's time to Graduate from those 1.5-3 day trips and go on a 8-10 dayer in the summer or fall. Once you do that, Say goodbye to those short trips, You will be hooked.
