My oldest son, Andrew (18) was surfing this morning at Law Street and did a backwards somersault (unintentional) after trying a floater and hit the sand.

I'm now at Scripps La Jolla where he had a Cat Scan and he fratured the C7 in his neck. He is now having a MRI done as I type (I work at this hospital - so I'm in my job trailer waiting).

The prognosis is good - he can move all of his limbs and the docs think he will probably just need a neck brace for the next 6-8 weeks.

Please send positive thoughts for him - thanks.

I wanted to post this as a reminder of always surfing with a buddy, as Andrew was alone when this occurred and it could have been really, really bad.

After he hit the sand - he thinks he blacked out for a split second, but then he walked to his car - it took him like 20 minutes - took of his rash guard - put on a shirt and drove home! I wanted to kill him.

Please let your kids/friends/anyone know that if you experience a neck/spine injury, they should dial 911 and have the professionals take it from there.

In retrospect - I should have called 911 and had an ambulance get him from the house, but I took him to the emergency room, where they immediately collared him and instructed him to NOT MOVE!

Thanks and I just wanted to share that with you all.

    Aaron

There is nothing scarier than seeing your child hurt. The signs are good that he can move his limbs and he is in my thoughts for a quick recovery without further complications. Thank goodness you got him in to the hospital! Keep us updated on his progress.

Aaron, I am praying for your son bro. We were just talking about this out in the lineup this morning.

As a C-5 fracture survivor, I can honestly say I know what he's going through.

Think good thoughts bro, and lets pray he'll be OK and able to surf again and live life fully.

Just got back from the hospital - Andrew and I just met with the neurosurgeon and the MRI came back all good!

He'll stay at the hospital tonight and possibly through tomorrow night but should be home after that.

He will have to wear the neckbracefor 6-8 weeks as expected and have some followup x-rays to sonfirm everything is healing correctly.

Man - having kids sure is scary. The phone never rings the same when you have children.

Thanks to all at BD for your support. I was stoked to read all of the replies of encouragement when I logged back on. I really, really appreciate it as does Andrew, too.

    Aaron

That's great news that he's checked out clear......an uncool looking neck brace is a welcome sight when the possible alternatives are considered. As a parent (Also of a son named Andrew....COOL name!), I feel sick to my stomach when my kids get hurt and would take on their illness or pain if I could.

Thank God he's o.k. and prayers for a speedy and full recovery.
