Turned on my underwater lights on at the dock and what I thought where seabass eating every smelt that came by within seconds turned out to be Shortfin corvina no doubt about these fish have fangs had my swimbait setup on boat and had to really work for a bite they would turn on my swimbait but not eat it when the tide really got moving they started eating the rubber lasted about 1 hour ended up with 6 with two over 5 lbs turn on the lights and they will come! 2322E4D3-101A-4E47-BD58-D47DB12CEF53.jpeg

Alternate Names: Bigtooth corvina, shortfin seabass, sea trout, weakfish, caravina and my personal favorite—vampire corvina. Called corvina aleta corta or corvina azul in Mexico.

Any pics of an orange mouth caught in sd waters? I've never seen or caught one here and have been targeting them since the 90's. I've had many claim to catch them here even other big vina hunters but every pic I've ever seen them show me is a shortfin. I've caught so many of both I can tell the difference right away with a decent picture.

This is the only picture we took. It was smallish and we threw it back. It was caught just off Zuniga jetty. When I was a kid, we caught these in Salton Sea.

Good eating fish. Both white seabass and corvina are croaker. We caught an orange mouth corvina last year in SD bay.
I’ve tried orange mouth corvina from salton sea and seabass including Chilean but never caught a Shortfin corvina so I had to try them I really don’t even want to say it but amazing

Captain as totally awesome as your day was and a huge well done on these fish as with many others these days it's best to send those back as Hook Photograph and Release as with bay bass no buzz kill intended Brother. Reasoning is with all the harbor fish up and down our coast the CDH in Sacramento has found extremely high levels of shipyard, street and storm/harbor drain substrates including toxic Bottom Paint CSD with Copper/DDT/Mercury and Lead. There's a test kit available that the USD Campus Marine Biologist Department and Surf Rider Foundation/Heal the Bay use I think you can get a 6 pack online for $45.00 including shipping. Sad as it is I would stay away from eating anything caught in a large harbor especially with children as you are what you eat.

Ironic how pollution is actually helping to enhance our bay fishing in regards to catch and release. Funny though everyone still keeps halibut. Maybe they don't accumulate toxins the same? Or maybe people just don't care because they're so dang delicious

Totally true I keep the Butt's as I do it's just so hard to sent those back so I suppose as with even the Blue Fin Tuna like Pete Grey on Let's Talk Hook up says OK as long as "eaten in moderation" heck I'm 63 so that cat for me is long out of the bag that's why my pee glows in the dark I suppose...
    God Bless Brother

PS: I've heard Barracuda, Sand Bass and White Croaker are toxic up there in the Santa Monica Hiperion dump site...crap dude this the World we are leaving our Children I could just cry.
