Fishing there this weekend from the surf. Anyone have any suggestions? I would like to hook up a Halibut and maybe some sand bass. Last time I was there we caught a few small sharks and a bunch of perch.

I hear the lucky craft flash minnows work well in the surf. No first hand experience just hear alot about them. Good luck

If your looking for sand bass you can go to where the wreck is and throw some swimbaits or if you want to go for bigger things get some cut bait and go for shark

X2 on the LC 110's. Or a surf rat fly on your fly rod.

I have a few mackerel left over from my last deep sea trip I may cut up and toss out for sharks.

First off it’s Mugu. 2nd it’s basically the same stretch of beach from port huneme, so more or less the same stuff works. There is also an estuary mouth which to me screams halibut. I’d start big with the LC and or drop shot in the deeper section East of the jetty, and if you don’t get anything move to a sand worm or sand crab (if available) west of the jetty. Watch out for surfers west of the jetty, it’s very popular. Also just s heads up, because of the special way that section of coast bends, the afternoon winds will be blowing offshore there, so you can cast a country mile. More reason to work the LC and drop shot really good before downgrading. The sand there moves around a lot, I haven’t been there in a while, sometimes the jetty is right in the water, other times it’s completely dry sand all the way around it. It all depends on how recently the harbor at huneme was dredged and how rough the winter currently and waves were. Good luck, it’s a special place!

Had a few bites and my camping buddy caught this Ray. I couldnt get the perch or mackerel to bite to save my life on saniki or cut mackerel.

thanks for the tip. I usually stay on the navy base and fish near the mugu lagoon. There were tons of seals this time traveling in and out. Im going to take my 15ft prowler out next time and just shore launch it near the MWR.

I worked on base for almost a year stayed on base at the RV site. When I was there the center of the beach had some great structure got a few hali's on the LC. If you want Leo's head out on the jetty by the mouth of the estuary. Fresh surf perch as bait caught numerous ones up to 60". There's a great drop off not too far of a cast straight out
