I'm posting for a friend who will be visiting and would love to fish. He will be by an Air Force base, sorry I forgot which one. Any help or direction would be great.

I am literally addicted to fishing, but let's be realistic here: "Ho's before fishing". There's so many there that it NEVER occurred to me that there might be fish in the water around the PI.

Sadly, much of the Philippines, and indeed the entire region, is fished out. If your friend is into diving at all, the area around MoalBoal near Cebu is pretty good underwater as well as various parts of Palawan. The fishing in the Philippines leaves a LOT to be desired. Most of it has already been caught and eaten.

Wow..... I did alot of fishing around Subic City in the 80's. But always next to a pitcher of Mojo's.

Never thought of fishing for Nonsplitfin..........

But I did hear of some guys that would surf fish from the island in Subic Bay.

Lots of fishing spots in the Philippines. At Laiya and Calatagan Batangas you can catch wahoos, sailfish, amberjacks, dorados, trevallies, and barracudas. At Subic, you can catch Giant Trevallies. If you want to go for Marlin, go to Cagayan. For Dogtooth tuna, anglers are jigging for them at the Batanes islands. For yellowfin tuna the southern islands like General Santos is the tuna capital of the Philippines. If you want to go largemouth bass fishing you can fish for them at Lake Lumot, Lake Caliraya, and Pantabangan dam. Barramundi you can catch them at Coolong, very close to Manila. You can pretty much go to any fishing village, rent a boatman and his local outrigger boat (banka) and go. All local boatmen/fishermen know the fishing areas and the productive fish attracting devices (FADs), known as "payaos" in the local dialect. All day fishing on local outrigger is cheap. If you want the pleasure of fishing on bigger boats/yachts, there are many you can charter out of Subic Bay marina, but be prepared to pay at a premium, comparable to prices here in the US. There are also several tackle shops in Manila, although most of the tackle available are those brands prevalent in the asian market. If you just want to relax, affordable beaches abound. Nightlife, go to Manila and party till you drop; it's a place that never sleeps. Like I said, the Philippines is an angler's paradise. Good luck and enjoy!

I live part time in Hong Kong and part time in the Philippines. Most people will tell you that both are fished out but if you know where to go there are fish to be caught. The Philippines especially, does have excellent game fishing spots but at the same time there are areas totally destroyed by dynamite fishing.

I have only tried the Davao Gulf, where my Philippine home is, a few times and caught nothing special but I have seen big tuna, wahoo, grouper and other good fish around so I know they are there. I just have to find out what they like and where they are. My boat will be in Davao soon with a high end echo sounder and GPS so the hunting will start in earnest when it arrives.

There are a number of people here who can advise and maybe show you around Cebu and Cavite. I am the only one I know in Mindanao but my boat won't arrive in Davao until next month so the options are a bit limited. Keep in touch so if my boat is ready and you are in Davao we can meet up.

Cavite is not far from Batangas where some of the best Philippines fishing is and there are some helpful guys with and without boats.

Where will you be in the summer?

I will most likely be in Davao but there are lots of guys around the Philippines and Hong Kong you can meet up with. Check sportfishingasia.com for details.

Take your dive gear to Moalboal outside of Cebu. Leave the rods home.
