Hey Guys, so I'm going to purchase a Torium 16HG this week and need some help on what rod to get. I've narrowed it down to a Phenix Rod and that's about it. This set u with be spooled with a 40lb backing and 20lb top shot For live bait used for those finicky tuna assuming they'll be back. Any suggestions?
I usually use the psw808mh for 25# with an Avet MXJ but I've dropped down to a 20# leader when they were finicky and still did okay. I personally wouldn't go with less than 50# spectra on a Torium 16. You'll still get plenty of line and 50# is easier to tie knots with than the smaller stuff.
For the ultra finesse fly line set up, you might consider 30# braid. Just my .02 For the record, mine is a 900xl (obviously not Phenix) with a Newell 229. #30 braid to 15-20 flouro. The 16hg is a little on the heavy side for this set up.
Thanks everyone. Went to my local store and after trying out all suggestions I went ahead with the AXIS HAX 780 MH. Nice rod and a little more in my price range than those Black diamonds. I'll get there one day. Now if those Tuna would come back locally I'll be ready to rock and roll. Thanks again
I've got my Torium 16HGA matched with a Black Diamond 809H. I used it to toss light iron a few weeks ago and it casts for miles. I can't wait to use it for live bait. It has a chance to replace my Talica 12II and Calstar 700MH as my favorite set up, and that's saying a lot! I really like my HAX rods too. Can't go wrong. When you are ready to get that black diamond next year call Island Tackle, you'll get a nice price break!
