    Hey guys,

Just looking for a little input from people who have used these rods. Looking to fish 50lb spectra to a top shot of 30-40lb flouro.

I've pulled on them both but at different stores and not side by side. The 808 seems like it has a nice tip to cast a 'dine with and the Hybrid seems like it shuts off quicker and is a little under rated line class wise.

I feel like the 808 is probably the one since I'll be fishing mostly braid to a super short top shot because it feels like it will absorb a bit more of the shock. Do you think the 30-40lb top is pushing it on the 808 and it might bottom out?

Hard to tell by just pulling on it in the store, so looking for real world opinions and what you guys use them for.

I have the PHD838MH and use it for 25-30. The PSW808MH is a softer rod in my opinion and would probably be better as a 25 rod. I believe your pushing it using 40.

    Just my 2 cents

I have both and fish them both at 30lb and 40lb. Get the 838MH Hybrid if you like faster action rods otherwise get the 808MH. You can fish the high range on the Phenix blanks no problem.

So you don't feel like you are maxing either out? I feel like the 808 is just a bit softer than a Calstar 800M and the 838 shuts off a bit quicker. I wish I could find somewhere that had them both so I could compare side by side.
Maybe I'm moving into the 809H territory?

I would say your assessment is pretty accurate. If you want more of a 40lb rod in the regular Black Diamond series, go with the 809H. Otherwise get the 808MH which will work for 40lb but is indeed more of a 30lb rod. The Hybrid 838H is equally good for both 30lb & 40lb IMO so go that way if you don't mind the faster action.

    Eric,

Phenix Rods can be in found at most Southern California tackle stores. Go up on www.phenixrods.com and check out the California Dealers.

    Good luck.
