Any one fish an 809 at 40#. It's rated 20-50. I haven't fished it yet, but it feels a little soft. Was planning on fishing it at 30#, but if I can bump it to 40# as well it'll save me from bringing one more set up.

    Thanks.

Yeah, It was the reel that was the issue.....If I had fathom/torque 15 or better a 25n, it would have been way easier.
Cool, thanks for the info. Ive got mine paired up with an MXJ G2 so figured I'd give it a go as a 40# set up. we'll see if it explodes. I guess I got that phenix warranty for something right?

If a penn 975 can do it the mxj g2 should be just fine. The mxj can be set to 13—14lbs drag at strike and have no binding. Penn 975 top out right around 12pounds and hold less line.

Oh for sure. I have been fishing my g1 at 40# for a while, so I know the g2 will smash, I was only concerned about the rod cause it's pretty soft. I'll find out in a few weeks tho 👀

Why cant you bring the 809 and the 6480?
The 809 abyss is not a legit 40 rod.
    More a 20-30

I can bring both but was trying to limit the amount of gear I had, and I feel like the abyss makes a better double duty 8' casting rod for bait and other lighter jigs than the 6480 does.

Mxj g2 w/ Abyss 809 light jig up to surface iron, sardine casting stick. 20-30-40#

    Penn fathom 25NLD2 w/ okuma 7' pch 30-60. Live bait/yoyo 40/50#

Penn fathom 40NLD2 w/ graftechs offshore 50-60 50-80# live bait and yoyo

    Avet hxw raptor 5/2 w/ graftechs 80-100 80-100# flat fall+bait

Also wanted to bring a light set up like a 20-30# 400 size baitcaster for smaller clean up duty and fishing the docks when we wait around to board.

They are what YOU feel they are. Others may go another way but they're your rods and how you use them is what counts.

Best advice right here. I have a 809 that I use for sturgeon up here in NorCal. I think it works just fine for 30 or 40lbs. Don't let the soft tip fool you.

a lot of opinions on fishing rods just above min or just below max line ratings, more specifically let pounds set at strike be your guide (not line rating)

    here's my spin:

fish your saltwater fishing poles where you like your bendo

if you have a rod in hand - try testing it by lifting a weight at or just under your strike drag setting and see how it feels - if the blank bottoms out (turns into a broom handle) or properly recoils - you don't want to bend the blank up like a pretzel, just a natural pull and lift and quickly reel-back-down action

your blank needs to load up and recoil (lift) back - recoil is what lifts your fish (ideally not your arms and back on larger fish) and proper recoil is what I look for when determining what drag to fish it at...

    PS

don't let a soft tip throw you off (especially useful when flipping live bait) the mid and backbone are what hold the recoil

    Bullshit.
You can tell yourself a rod can do whatever you want, doesn't mean it will.

You fish sportboats. You've seen tons of people under gunned who thought they could run with the big dogs.

The black diamond psw809h felt like a 30lb rod. The abyss is softer. Hybrid black diamond is a little bit stiffer. The black diamond 809h was bottoming out when I tried fishing it with 40.

I agree that the 809h doesn't really work for 40#. Try the 809xhj instead! It's one of my favorites together with the 909xhj.

softer tips helps with those head shake, specially now days that most fish with straight braid and short top shots
