has anyone used it as a jig stick reel for throwing surface irons? Or is the star drag fathom that much better casting?

The lever drag versions cast extremely well, but the star drag versions are still better.
A good way to judge is to consider what the "realistic" chances are that a fish [any species] over 50 pounds will eat your surface iron in the location where you fish.
If so, go with the 2-speed lever drag; otherwise, stick with the star drag.

When he bluefin were on the poppers 3 years ago, I used my 40nld2 on a 800xh jigstick to throw the bigger bull pop and it did extremely well for a lever drag (especially once hooked). Because of that first experience with them, I bought all the fathoms. I’d estimate a 10% gain on the star drag roughly.

I have the TRQ30LD2 on my jig-stick and love it.

I cast my fathom lever drags a ton, both single and 2-speeds. In particular, the FTH30LD filled with 80lb braid and a short 40lb leader goes great on my jig stick - and the 5.3:1 gear ratio actually swims surface irons really well. Plus, the lower gear ratio is nice when bit on the less forgiving long rod!

They cast great, but not as great as the star drag. That being said the fish in my avatar (75lb bluefin) was caught on a popper on my 10’ jigstick with a 25nld2. The low gear basically made the fight unfair. The same day my good buddy hooked and landed a 133lber on a Tranx, and it was pretty brutal to watch. If we see that sort of thing happening again, I think I’ll pick up a 30LD2 and fish it exactly like Marco above me, but with a heavier leader.
