So I bought a Knobby Mag 15SDCS Penn Fathom II. This after my great experience with Seigler SS which I replaced with an SS Sideplate with PMR Bespoke Mag.

Upon testing it on water I find the knobby mag digging on my wrist everytime when i’m reeling the line back in. Oddly the location of the knobby mag is on the Left side of the plate hence the issue. I did not have this issue with my Seigler as the location of the knobby mag is on the Right side of the plate.

Did some little research and found some solution with less than $10 in parts including shipping. So for those who wanna go this route, the process is simple and easy as Plug and Play. Maybe for those who had not opened up a reel the difficulty is 1-2/10 if theres any.

Maybe for Penn its for practical and cost effecient reason that they only have to manufacture one sideplate that will fit both the regular Fathom II 15SD and the 15SDCS. All they have to do is just install either a Brake Dial for the Regular 15 and a Knobby Mag for the 15 Casting Special. Its understandable.

Anyway for those some people like me who have some issue with it, there’s a sort of fix and this will give a little bonus having a Better bearing with the Casting Special if I’m correct. All Black Color is nice looking too than black/gold.

Just take Note you have to buy a New Screw too together with the Brake Dial as the screw for the knobby mag will not fit. Hope this helps.

Note: You must purchase a New Screw for the Brake Dial.

But how does it cast? 😁
I haven’t tried with the brake dial yet but i assume its the same with the knobby knob as they both have the same mag mechanism inside. Its only the knob thats being change. The knobby is good for those who wanna adjust the mag on the fly as its easy to turn. Basically for tournament guyz.

The new Fathums mag cast design is not well thought out. I sometimes hit the knob with my wrist while tiuning the handle. Luckily The shop had a original 40N without the cast control.

My old 525 Mag came with that knob! The mag version of the 535 had the bigger tubular knob to make it easier to adjust on the fly for casting contests. Probably why they went with that style on the 15.

You mean a Knobby knob on your old 525? Is it on the same left side location?

My bad, my original 525 Mag has a slider. Your replacement looks like the one on the 525 Mag 2 or the Squall 15. Your original knob is similar to the one on the 535 Mag or the 525 tournament. The bag your replacement came in says 525 Mag 2 on the label? They changed to that style on the later 525 Mag 2's.

It looks like the Mag 2's were a European reel, they look identical to the Squalls sold here in the US.

How's the improvement? How's the casting performance of this reel compared to the Fathom II 25N or the Newells?
I did not see any casting difference between 25N and 15 cs as they are both Fathom II Star Drags....can’t speak for Newells. Eventually someone more knowledgeable with Newells will chime though.

Each is different.
The 15CS [and all 12 &15 size Fathom II's] have a "magnetic" cast control.
The FTHII25N star drag has a "centrifuge brake" cast control.
The Fathom 25N lever drag and all Newells have no cast control.

Those are the same mag cast control parts used in the Squall 15 sold here in the US. What Penn calls the Mag2 in Europe is the Squall here.

Yes, I have a fthii15sd and when I got it, it wouldn’t freespool for long on the lowest mag setting so I took out the magnet assembly and oiled the bearings and freespool greatly improved. My buddy has the 15 casting special and his freespools forever with the mag still installed

Magnetic-controlled reels will definitely not achieve the long-running freespool that some people are looking for.
The way the magnets work is, the faster the spool turns, the more influence they exert.
When doing a typical gentle cast with a flylined bait, the magnets barely activate, but when you cast a jig forcefully, they do a lot more.
With any of the PENN Fathom star drag models, de-greasing the spool shaft and bearings, and adding the speed oil of your choice will make a major difference.

I did this mod yesterday on my new Fathom 2 15sdcs. Worked perfectly...thanks Rexor!
On the other hand, my brother bought the Squall 15sdcs because he fishes lefty and the Fathom is not offered in a lefty model....which is just weird. Anyway, the Squall side plate is set up differently than the Fathom. The spindle sleeve seems to be pressed in (?) and we were afraid of damaging the side plate trying to remove it so we left his as is with the goofy knobby knob. Can the sleeve assembly be removed and put back in without damaging the side plate? If so, how?
Upon test casting these reels we are both very impressed! They cast further than both of our low profile reels (Komodo and Penn 400) on the same rod and are super smooth in operation. Now I'm wondering how well the levelwind model of this reel casts compared to the low profile reels?
We will find out how they fish on the San Diego on 5/15.

The levelwind versions [both Fathom and Squall] do not use the "Live Spindle" design, so will not cast nearly as well as the non-levelwind versions.

the level wind squall does not have the live spindle so it won’t cast well.

I have the 12 size in left and it’s a far better for light line flylining than my low profiles

Can the knobby knob be replaced on the Squall sdcs? We couldn't remove the spindle sleeve carrier as it seemed to be pressed in. Thanks.

This answer from the service dept.-

Yes the knobby knob can be replaced. Parts needed are 302H-525MAG2 1214685 screw and 302B-525MAG2 1214682 dial.

The bushing does not need to be removed. Once screws 21A are removed the magnet 302 can be removed giving you access to the knob screw 12C. 12C gets replaced with the 1214685 screw and the knob gets replaced with the dial 1214682. Very easy swap to do.
