Whats up guys,

I just bought a Fathom 12 star drag and I'm looking for recommendations on the best way to set this up. I plan on using it for 15-25 fly lining on an Abyss 15-40.

Should I go 30 lb braid with enough room for 50 yards of mono/ fluoro?

Or should I go 40 lb braid to the top with only enough room for a short leader?

Or should I set up a different way? Any opinions welcome.

I opt for the 40lb. braid/very short top shot for my TRQ12 or FTH 12 on my abyss. Sweet setup, and the abyss has a moderate bend which is more forgiving with the short leader. For faster rods like the Black diamond I would probably have the 25-40 yard mono topshot with a 4-5 foot floro leader. Either way is fine, depends on if you are comfortable with the braid in the water, and the "tanglers" you are fishing with. Straight open party day boat situations might favor the longer mono topshot.

It's about 300 yards of 40# braid. I just put some Diawa X8 on a FTH 12. TRQ 12s I've got 300 yrds PP Maxquatro on one and 300 yards JB solid on the other (both to top). Mileage my vary with how tightly it's wound on, but in any case 275-300 yards is plenty for schoolie YFT and BFT. Good luck

275-300yds of 40# Diawa x8 on the FTH12? Sweet...

FWIW, Penn advertises 320/30# braid. Big diff in diameter between 30# and 40#. Another example, I got 330/40# Berkley Prospec on my Trini14a. Shimano advertises 375/40# Powerpro.

Wish mfg would tell us exactly what brand/model/dia braid they used to get their figures!

I originally spooled mine up to the top with 40 lb braid and fished a short top shot, but now I have it half-filled with braid and I fill the other half with fresh 20 lb. Izor mono every trip. Just seems to get bit better this way and line capacity hasn't been an issue. Awesome live bait reel for these local yft

I have 240 yds. j8 and use 20 yd top shot 15,20,25.what ever it takes to get bit.Its on a calstar gft 15-40 8ft.using lighter line in open water is,not a problem. If you get into bigger fish move up I've caught 45lb blue fin on 25 and 30-35 lb on15

I would go 30# braid so you have some capacity and enough room to cast mono. The 30# braid does not cast well. Either does the 40# IMO. Caught some good size fish with this set-up using 20# or 25# topshot. Have fun.
