Booked for 8 dayer this upcoming mid July. Trying to figure out a place in my arsenal for my new international 12VSX . How would you rig it up and what rod would you use it with?

    I fish mine on a Calstar 800XXH. It’s filled w/80-lb ProSpec, and I use it with 60 and 80-lb leaders. It’s a beast of a little reel.

*note, I’m using the VISX not the VSX...

Is 12 or 16 visx better for 80lb rig? Where do 20 and 30s fit in?

I have the 12 set up as a 60 lb setup with 80 braid/60 lb leader.
    I have the 16 set up as a 80lb rig .

the reels are a little heavier than the MAk's but I really like the free spool.
Farmed a cow bft on the 12 last week after a chewoff long surface fish battle on the 60 lb leader. Was really impressed with the reel. I know some changed the handle on the 12 but I thought it was fine.

Mine shit the bed right out of the box, losing low gear on a 125 lb. yft. I haven’t fished it since I got it back from Penn but hope it’s ok now. Mine is filled with 80 Threadlock.

Could you explain the failure in more mechanical terms.

    Andre,
I have to disagree with you on the weight comparison. I have both MAK16SEA and VISX 16. The MAK is 40 oz. where as the VISX 16 is 36 oz. I am not sure about the comparison between VISX 12 and Mak 15. I do own a VISX 12 but none of the smaller MAK. Not sure if the MAK 15 is a good comparison. The MAK and VISX are both excellent reels. There are some differences in gear ratios and line capacities.

Penn didn’t specify what broke. In the middle of fighting the fish, the reel lost low gear. When it crapped out, it felt like something sheared or gave way inside. When low was engaged, the handle would just spin around with no line coming on the spool. High gear seemed to be working normally. Lots of fun trying to wrestle a pissed off 125 lb. Hurricane Bank tuna to the boat in high gear. Thank God it wasn’t bigger. Fishy had no problems with his so I probably just got a lemon.

David - is that topshot mostly for abrasion? the reel doesnt have enough drags at Full (with freespool) for 80-100#

Well I am using it as a experiment for fishing cows......am getting about 27#-28# at strike about 33# at full with freespool....very marginal for cows but I am hoping this reel will enable me to actually cast a sardine efficiently I had Randy at UC build a rod just for this reel and casting.....7'6" extra light tip and a Viper butt section

    Life is a adventure....LOL

Sounds like the 16 is a better option for 80/100.

That's a easier choice the 12 is the tough choice...lol...really the 20 is the obvious choice for 100# IMO.

So I’m doing a shoot out between Maks and Penn Internations as I’d prefer to have made in the USA if performance is equal or better.
Mak sea 50 vs Visx 50 for #130
Mak sea 20 vs Visx 30 for #100
Mak sea 16 vs Visx ? for #80

I did my own little test reeling dead weight up to my balcony, comparing my Mak 20 and 16 to my VISX 20 and 16. Results; I’ll definitely keep using my Makairas.

To the original question, I spooled my VISX 12 with 80# Threadlock, mainly for using 60# topshots. I don’t think there’s a comparable 60# class reel out there. It sits on my Phenix 760 2XH.

    I have a 16 and I would say it’s better for 100, but I think it’s big for 80.

I don’t have the 12, but I would think it perfect for 80.
