Late report for Memorial Day 5/31. Left HH at 9 am made some bait and headed towards PV. Thought I would make a few casts at the wall and realized that I left my baitcaster at home had to make due with my Florida rig. Tied on a 40 gram sardine jig and caught a few small calicos. Went searching for birds found some quick moving dolphin on bait then the birds joined made some casts for nada tons of scales in the water and finally a got a random calico. Went further out and saw a small kelp paddy and made the cast hooked up with something small looked like a small yellow minus the yellow tail part. (See Picture) Saw a bunch of them swimming around under it. Headed in did two drifts by Ester for a Sandy and two dink sculpins. Water outside was 63 and super clean and blue inside the wall was pea soup and as warm as 65 in some spots. All fish released. Long time lurker first time poster so critic away

Thanks for the report. Glad you came out of the closet.

It looks like a baby yellowtail to me. But I agree, the color is off a little.

One thing for sure, you will easily beat your PB YT in the future.

Smallest yellowtail I've ever seen. or a smelt dressed up as a yellowtail for Halloween except it's June. Nice catch and pics.

Thank you for posting.

I stopped posting fish reports because, after posting, lurkers would be trying to find my spot in big numbers. I would see them with bino's looking at me, my boat and my spot and then coming in.

If enough were to add to the reports, the issue would be non-existent.

Thanks again. Newbs, post up wins or losses.

It's not a baby yellow tail .we drifted past a Patty one-time Rock fishing back in the seventies and a guy caught five of them and they look exactly like a big yellowtail...tail and all...
Not sure what that fish is...maybe some one will know

I've caught paddy YT that were smaller than the bait. Put them in the bait tank and they can hide behind the Sardines. They looked like little YT which that picture doesn't. I'll go along with those saying juvenile sablefish.

I've caught quite a few yellows like that and they already had forked tails.
So what is it? The other guesses were black cod and remora. To me it looks much more like a yellowtail than either of those.

Def. not a Ramora. I have caught several Ramora.....not even close.

I agree with the Black Cod ID.

    Nice report.

It is definitely not a baby yellowtail. The baby yellowtail below is about the same length and you can obviously see that it has characteristics of an adult yellowtail. The tail is yellow, the eyes are yellow, there is a yellow stripe and the dorsal/anal fins are yellow.

Thanks for the comments and identification I just wanted to believe it was a yellow I'll get one next time. Good call on the juvenile sablefish / black cod I am sure that is what it is. The fish had two separated fins on the back as apposed to one long one on the yellow and the tail is indeed more forked on the yellow.
